Starter Relay wiring question (84 F150 302)
Hello all,
I'm sure we all have done this in some sort. However I needed a new Starter Relay and my son wanted to replace it for me, so he did and for some reason, he forgot to take a pic first.
Anyway he put everything that "He Thought" back together and we tried to start it (New Starter & Battery & Relay) and the relay kept clicking, checked the voltage on the battery and I had to recharge the battery. Now we try to turn it over nothing happens, even the cab lights, head lights, radio etc. do not work. Everything worked before we installed the starter, relay and battery. Yes I know that the posts are not tight, I was going to put the old relay back on but I figured I'd ask first.

Can anyone steer us in the right direction? Attached is a pic of the wiring.

There should be a red wire with a light blue stripe coming from the cab to the starter solenoid. This one should mount on the front of the solenoid, to close the relay.

Did you try it with a good battery and tight connections? It will just click with those connections loose. You can also start probing around with your meter or testlight. Put the testlight or meter on the battery wire, see if you have voltage. Then turn the key while keeping the testlight or voltmeter on the battery wire and when it clicks, do you still have voltage? You can check the black wire like this also.

I recently redid a bunch of this wiring on my 1984 F150 302 because the plug failed (the big round plug in the middle of your picture). However...I can't really see what's going on in your picture here. I think you're going to have to following the wiring from the plug towards the alternator. The broken red and yellow wires should connect to something in the alternator harness (follow the large yellow wire). They don't go to the alternator, but they're all wrapped up together in the alternator harness. There should be a junction on the large yellow wire...or a fusible link, etc.

In this diagram look on page 14. This is for a 1981, but they all are very similar.
Charge & Power Distribution - Gary's Garagemahal (the Bullnose bible)
Fuse link J in the diagram hooks to the large terminal on the solenoid that goes to the battery + post. This is the important one that feeds most everything electrical in the truck and is the one the previous poster is questioning you on.
