Not Charging!

OK,here's the problem.I can't get a charge to the battery.I have replaced everything to replace.ie battery, alternator, voltage reg.,starter relay, replaced battery cables, starter, and belts. My lights are very dim and the horn is sluggish when at an idle.Normally when I get on the throttle the lights get brighter but not any more. All of the guages are reading good at start-up but if I let it set they will all slowly fall, even the oil press. guage.
From the starter relay positive side goes to the Bat. terminal on the alt.
-neg. side of the starter relay goes to the Grnd. on the alt.
-choke goes to the stator on the alt.
-voltage reg. goes to the Fld. on the alt.
For some reason I have burned 3 Neg wires from the starter relay to the Alt. when turning the ignition over.
Someone please help me!What am I doing wrong? The Alt. tested good and the battery did also. All other electrical parts are about two weeks old.

it sounds like your having a wireing problem, check all of your battery cables, grounds, any wires can look good on the outside but still be bad,I'm pretty sure this has been coverd several times in the forum, somebodie will jump in with more info for you,but this will get you going in the right direction, good luck

There should be no wire coming off the starter side of the starter relay going to the alternator ground. That is nothing but a short. No knowing what year your truck is makes it a little hard to say how to wire it. The big wire on the alternator winds up back at the battery side of relay. The I (ignition) S (stator) wires connect to the regulator which depending on year of truck is either on the fender well near the starter relay or is on the back of your alternator. My advice is search the internet for a wiring diagram they are out there.

Topnotch50;
I’m not sure I understand how your starter relay is wired. You mentioned a “negative” side of the starter relay. I think there is no “negative” terminal on the starter relay. The mounting bracket of the relay is its negative or ground path.

The positive terminal of the battery should be cabled to the large terminal on the left of the relay. The cable to the starter is attached to the large terminal on the right side of the relay. When the relay is activated, the relay’s internal switches apply positive voltage directly to the large starter cable terminal and the smaller “I” terminal. If your alternator ground wire is connected to the “I” terminal, that wire is probably going to burn open as soon as the relay is activated.

The relay is activated when positive voltage is applied to the “S” terminal via the ignition switch. Positive voltage flows from the “S” terminal through the relay’s internal coil to the ground from the relay’s mounting tabs being bolted onto the fender.

Good Luck with your problem. I hope this helps.

On the starter relay there is a side that the pos. battery cable goes to and a a side that the neg. cable goes to.Then there are the 2 small posts in the middle.I had the Alt. Grnd. connected to the "neg. side" of the relay and it was in fact burning up the wire.I put the neg. wire from the Alt. to the neg. post on the battery and the amps did go up but it only went from about 2.9amps to 8.2 amps. That was enough to keep the guages from falling but the lights are still very dim.The Pos. from the Alt. is going to the "pos. side" of the relay. and the stator is going to the choke wire. The field post is going to the voltage regulator.I had the Alt. tested today and the guy at the shop said it was fine but gave me a new one just to shut me up.The battery checked good also.
The neg. post wire was always connected to the same side of the voltage regulator as the ground cable. Now,when it is connected there and I turn over the ignition it smoke checks the whole wire.Lots of smoke! But I connected it to the neg. battery post. Now no prob with the wire but still not enough amps.
Thank you to everyone who has replied. If anyone can verify the wiring from the alt. that would be very helpful.Everything is the same from when I took it off except for the Neg. alt. post wire which has been relocated to the neg. battery post.

I had a similar problem and found that the yellow wire going into
the voltage regulator module had corroded and was open. I changed
the connector with one I purchased at a local parts store and
it fixed the problem. Hope this helps!!
