Starter Heat Shield

Hi all, member since March 2015, first post. Great site. I read many posts when I first joined regarding rebuilding a stock FE 360 to some great performance. Great advice!

I wanted to ask if anyone has done anything to shield the starter from header heat? I have a 1975 F-100 Ranger, with the FE, and Hedman 89180 headers. I have just changed out my starter from what I believe was failure due heat damage.

Does anyone know of a particular header that would give more clearance for a heat shield? Other solutions? Clearance is less than 1/4" between the tubes and the starter.

Many thanks!
Tully

I'd try wrapping the header where it passes by the starter. That should do the trick.

Sanderson headers. I'm not sure but I think the # is FF427 or FE427.. Hmmm, one of those days. You might get away with wrapping just that area near the starter, BUT in my experience, wrapping pipes will cause them to rust. You'd be better off making a heat shield from 10 gauge galv sheet metal and attach it to the headers - not the starter. Just a flat piece of metal to deflect the heat. OR, treat yourself to a set of Sanders. They hug the block and go straight down just behind the towers.

69cj and the Masked Rider, thank you both for your responses. The Sanderson headers come up in some posts.
Thanks again!

If you bolted Sandersons on correctly, they promise no leaks.

Hey thanks again. Getting any pair headers sealed up seems like a challenge!

I went through this 30-something years ago with a BB 67 Stang. What causes this is weak field coils in the starter. I had a shop rebuild one with new high torque field coils and never had a problem afterwards. The typical reman starters never have new coils installed. They just reuse the old ones.

Wow! very interesting. I just put a reman starter in. I think I might try that first before dropping $$ on new headers and starter. Thank you very much!

Does anyone know if the Sanderson FF427 fits with a 75 F100 Ranger 4WD? Summits fitment check system says no. I really appreciate all the parts advice above. Esp the photos from resonateur, that is a clean looking motor! Gave me a good idea of it as well.

Thanks again all!

Installed 64 Thunderbird 390 in 65 F100 using Hedman headers, very little clearance with no starter issues however clearance between header collector flange and crossmember can be a pain in the backside. Brain storming with little to work with and will deny if asked had extra fireplace gasket seal left over and routed the starter cable to the relay thru the sock, possible of some benefit thought it was ingenious at the time?? .
