What starter?

Need to decide on what starter to get, not too far from putting the headers on. 1983 300ci with the srod tranny. Since it's going to be a pita to get to once the headers are on, I'm open to spending extra $ on it. Fit and forget so to speak. Suggestions?

some people go to mini-starters here, for the extra clearance.
1. you've got a better chance of getting to it if you need to replace it
2. more clearance means it shouldn't suffer as much from the heat coming off the headers

It's also advisable to design some sort of heat shield for the starter to protect it from the extra heat. It'll help it last longer.

Yeah I have been looking at mini's, but all of the ones on summit say they only fit the 5-speed trannys, which my srod is the 4-speed. And I figure some heat wraps over the starter? Would that suffice?

There was an outfit on eBay that listed mini high torque starters at one time...I don't know if they still do.

I would think the being as the 5speed and 4speed use the same bellhousing pattern and the engine would use the same flywheel for both transmissions the starter would be the same?

I would think so too. The flywheel would be the same.
Although, I've seen two bolt and three bolt starters, maybe that's the difference? I know my SROD uses a 2 bolt.

Thanks for the link rustywheel, I'll match that up with what's on summit. And yeah AB I'm 100% sure mine is two bolts, after holding it with one hand for 20 minutes while trying to bolt it on with the other. Pretty sure the oem starter does not weigh less than 30 lbs!

My NP435 speed starter was fine when I swapped to the 5 speed, the starters on auto trans are different though, they won't disengage from the manual trans flywheel.

Also, a '78 with 4 speed and 351M uses the same as an Auto trans in our trucks. There seems to be alot of variables with Ford...
