Hi-all, I am rebuilding a 72 f250 360 in to a 390 but need a 4x4 oil filter adapter--I have a standard 2wd adapter, but engine is going into 76 f150 4wd. Any help is appreciated.
I don't mind new, NOS or used, along with the mounting gasket to block. Many thanks to all for your help.
That one was a one year only part. It angles the filter down and forward at a 45* angle. I would try the regular pickup truck adapter first before that one. Or one for a car. The one you're asking about can get pricey. The gasket's the same for all

As mentioned above this is a one year only (1976) part design so they are somewhat rare. The part number is D6TE-6881-AB. I know a guy who had a couple of these not too long ago I will check to see if he has one to part with. Where are you located?
I sold one 15 years ago for $85 on ebay. Don't know what they go for now.
A remote filter wouldn't be any cheaper once you buy the block adapter, hoses and filter mount.
wsu0702, I am in Great Falls, MT, I would be interested in it if it is available.------krewat-my truck is a 1/2 ton F150 4wd, many thank for all and as to which way to go.-nobrandx
On topic... What was so different in 1976 to need this adapter? I have several trucks and really never saw what was the reasoning. It was the last year of the FE. Frames seem no different than 1973-1975. I have a 1976 highboy that has a 390 from a car that has the car adapter and it works. And I have a 4wd 1976 F150 that has the earlier truck adapter that sticks the oil filter straight out and it works. But I also bought a 1974 F150 4wd that had this adapter on it but knowing it was swapped from a 76. Only time I ever got into oil filter adapter issues was 2wd. They are all very particular for the normal truck adapter. And a buddy of mine has a 65 wagon and he couldn't fit the truck adapter and bought a car adapter from me to use.
Since so many in this thread have knowledge to this adapter I'd love to hear the story for I've just never asked before.
Is it because they went to a high-pinion front-diff in '76? My highboy, and the disc-brake open-knuckle front-end I put in it that was, I think from a '75, was a low-pinion diff.

I only knew about it when I ran across one in a junkyard back when I was between jobs and hunting parts to resell. Since I knew from the engineering numbers it was a one year part I asked for and got a good price ($85) and since someone jumped on it a day or so after listing it, I figured it was worth more than I had asked. Apparently somebody in production and engineering figured a need for the redesign.
I just figured- that I would need it being it came from a 2wd going to a 4wd, but what the heck I'll try the one that came off the 72 2wd. Thanks for all of you guys help.
It is much appreciated-will let all know what I did when engine is done--many thanks!!!
