My Oil filter mount sits right over the front two inches of the lower cross member. With a Fram PH8A filter ( standard size for the FE ) there is about 1/4 inch vertical space from the bottom of the filter to the top of the cross member.
Just enough wiggle room to get the filter on and off.
Is this design brilliance? Or, another unintended consequence of my apparent mix-n-match engine?
I don't recall this being an issue when I put the 390 in my 65 F100?
Is there a shorter oil filter out there that will fit?
FE engines: The car oil filter adapter is vertical, the truck oil filter adapter is horizontal.
If the car oil filter adapter is present and the left rubber insulator breaks (somewhat common), the filter could hit the cross member splitting it open.
If you want to retain the car oil filter adapter (I assume this is what you have)...1975/78 Mustang II's with 302 used a shortened version of the FL-1A oil filter: FL-300.

So I assume you are talking about a possible motor mount failure that would cause damage to the filter?
The left engine mount breaks, the engine rears up then when comes back down...
If you have the car vertical oil filter adapter with the Motorcraft FL-1A, the filter could hit the cross member splitting it open. Not pleasant!
So I guess I'm going to order a truck one.
Could it have been that my 65's 390 sat farther forward on the mounts. One thing I remember an oldtimer showing me was just reversing the engine frame mounts when I put it in. It originally had a I6 300.

If the oil filter adapter is vertical, it's from a car. Trucks used a horizontal adapter.
Instead of replacing the car oil filter adapter, you could use the shorter oil filter (Motorcraft FL-300) I alluded to in post #2.
4x4 trucks used the vertical oil filter mount, while 2wd used the horizontal one. Don't run a Fram filter either, they are junk. Genuine FL1As are available from WalMart for a very good price.
When I got my truck, the oil filter on my 390 was in the vertical position and making contact with the frame crossmember. The parts man told me to use a 3/4 quart Dodge filter.
It fit perfectly and was shorter, so it has clearance from the crossmember.
Here are some filters which should work for you:
Puolator L-2081
AC PF20
Wix 51068
NAPA 1068
Fram PH43
Chrysler 3549957
Hastings LF196
Good luck.
