I'm in the process of replacing the 300 cu. in. in line 6 cylinder engine in a 1978 4X4 F150 with a 390 engine from a 1972 2 wheel drive pickup. The oil filter is about 2" too long to clear the plumbing from the power steering box. I'm guessing that I need a different adaptor to bolt to the block so the filter points down other than out the side. What engines, if any, has this type of filter mount. Or, is there a shorter filter than the fram PH8A that I can subsitute? Any idea's are welcome. Thanks, Allan
Go with the remote filter kit. It will be the best thing you ever do for yourself. FORD engineers seem to delight in the fact that the oil filter will dump oil all over the crossmember and suspension when removed. I moved mine, 97 F250 4x4 5.8W, to the frame under the drivers door. It's so easy and CLEAN now, I sometimes want to change it just for the fun of it. Good luck.
I have a 390 from a 1970 patrol car in my 76 F-150, and I have to use the dodge filter to clear. (Ph-43?) someday I will get around to swapping all the truck stuff over, but for now it works well.
Any Early seventies F250 4x4 with a 360 Fe motor should have one that points down. Or check with your local ford dealer for the 427 oil adapter part # coaz-6881-a
or you can use the FL300 FORD oil filter that is available at walmart . http://mansfieldmustang.com/02-38.JPG
that is part number C8AE-6881-A that is the high flow version ....works quite well that is what I put on my truck.
there is also a "regular" flow version..but I would get the better of the two.
The shorter filter is a WIX 51085, or Napa Gold 1085.
First time i went to do an oil change i got the wrong filter...Too long. Ever since Ive been using the Napa gold 1085.
And yeah, I always change my oil in the parking lot and ya just cant get it all in the container, cause it hits everything on its way down, And spreading everywhere when it hits the diff housing.
