When I went to change the oil after buying my '68 F-100, I discovered that the oil filter for the 390 was so close to the front crossmember that i had to jack up the engine to get it off. I went to my local Advance auto parts store (BIG mistake) to see if a shorter filter was available. Nope, said the clerk, a teeny-bopper who only knew what his computer told him. So i bought the one the computer said, and put it on. A couple of months later, it developed a BIG oil leak. Turns out the normal up and down motion of the engine in its mount had caused the filter to contact the crossmember and crack the filter. So every time the engine ran it pumped oil OUT the filter! This time I went to a REAL auto parts store (not staffed by teeny-boppers!) and asked the clerk if a shorter filter was available. He said "You need a 3/4 quart Dodge filter." So i bought one and it works great! The box said it replaces the following filters: AC PF20, Purolator L-20081,
Wix 51068, Fram PH43, NAPA 1068, Chrysler 3549957, Hastings LF196. If you need a shorter filter for your 390, try one of these. Hope this helps somebody.
Which way is your oil filter mounted - horizontal or vertical? Sounds like it is verticle. There were two different oil filter adapters that bolted to the engine block. My 1969 F100 with the original 360 came with the horizontal adapter and has no oil filter clearance issues. Sounds like someone installed the car adapter on you truck. You can stick with the shorter filters, or go to the junk yard and get the right adapter.
