Oil Question, but not an Oil Thread

Okay, I know this is a silly question for some of you, but I have done a search not finding an answer. I also do not want to go through the trial process if someone already has done it, so here is the question.

After checking my oil, using the dip stick, I see that I am at the lower mark for adding oil. I know that this engine has around 14 quarts of oil, so my question is approximately how may quarts does it take to get from the minimum mark to the max?

Thanks

On my dipstick it says two quarts, but I interpret that as meaning two quarts gets you from on the dipstick but below minimum to within the hashed area. As long as you're in the hashed area you should be good. Too much oil and the crank throws will splash in the oil and aerate it, which isn't good for lots of things.

Trial process? It is not much of a process to add a quart and see how much that raised it, then decide if you want to add another.

You are correct except for pulling and putting the dip stick back in my truck is a royal pain. Sure I could do it, but if someone has already done it and has the answer, then why duplicate what someone else has already done?

I know that the volume required to go from the bottom tippy tip of the dipstick to the full mark is right at 2 gallons. I've verified that a couple of times. That's also just about the point where the truck won't run because the oil level in the sump is at or below the oil pick-up tube. Don't ask.

I don't fret over such things, I'd just add a quart and move on.

What makes it so hard? It the stick itself is the difficulty investigate and repair otherwise it might break off in there someday.

C'mon now. The dipstick in these things is not as user friendly as it could be. A version of the round trans stick would be easier to use.
Is it a problem, no.

Right on point. I have no prior experience with diesels, but I do know when I check my oil, that dip stick comes out easy, but it a pain to put back in. That is probably normal, but I have no prior experience with diesel engines. I would agree something like the round trans stick would probably work better.

Thanks to the info.

I always add one quart when at bottom of hash marks,as far as over filling crankcase with Our large capacity,a pint over would not be as dramatic like the 5 or 6 quart on a gas engine
