e-brake spring inside hub

This spring seems to provide most of the muscle for preventing the parking brake from sticking or dragging. One of mine has lost some of its temper, I think. It is weak compared to the other side.

Has anyone ever replaced just this part? Maybe I can get a new one and wind it on there. Anybody tried this?

Mine is a 73 f250, front rotors, back drums, hd brakes. Haven't found the right cables to buy, so maybe just a spring, plus freeing up the cables as much as I can.

The spring is prevented from coming off by the cable end piece.

Here's an example of where to buy a cable :

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ford,1973,f-250,6.4l+390cid+v8,1122815,brake+&+wheel+hub,parki ng+brake+cable,1696

FMJ.--Thank you for the link. I checked it out. My truck seems to have heavy duty brakes. My cables come in to the backing plate at a 45 degree angle. Those shown on Rockauto appear to be for non-hd brakes. I installed one of those standard cables just to give it a try and it didn't work.

Maybe if I found the right spring I could thread it on and leave the old one on too. Seems like it might stay in place as long as the cable was connected to the lever and inside the backing plate.

Today I will check on my old cables and see if the ATF they've been soaking in has made them work slicker. That's my Plan A. If I still don't trust them, looking for springs will be Plan B.

FWIW :

Mine fitted HD brakes, like the picture below, on an F350 with a Dana 70.

Maybe try the F350 link in Rockauto as they have several lengths per cables specified.

I chose a variety of lengths coz my truck e brake setup is 'foreign' and not exactly the same as US trucks, and they worked perfectly.

Or, if you're lucky, ND will tell you EXACTLY what you need.

FMJ---I will go back to Rockauto and try looking at the f350 stuff if my old ones give up the ghost. I put them back on today. Then on my first spin around the block I forgot to let off the emergency brake and heated up the drums. I need to get the brake indicator light working.

As far as I can tell your brakes look just like mine. Less colorful because I have new green and red and purple springs.

I think you need to adjust them up more as the truck should hardly move.

Fuzz, Thanks for that. I tightened them up and now when I put it in Drive I don't go anywhere. I drove a couple miles after I adjusted them and the drums were barely warm, so I know I didn't make them overly tight.

I really have to stomp that little pedal to get it to catch so that the brake is on. I feel like I'm abusing it, but that's where it ends up if I want the parking brake to hold the truck.

Post the basic part number of the spring you're referring to.

Pic: Notice the 'curly-Q' 2068 brake hold down springs. These were only used with front dual piston calipers on F250 2WD & 4WD (1976/79) with 12" x 2 1/2" and F350's 12" x 3" rear brakes.

The front drum pic is for 1973/75 F250 4WD with 12 1/8" x 2" drum brakes, discs weren't available until 1976.

Bill, The brakes are back together now, and seem to work fine. Parking brake included. As far as I can tell. The cable got more free with some soaking and cleaning and working it.

The spring I was after was on the end of the parking brake cable. It connects to the lever 2A637 in the picture, but is not shown.

Mine does have the 12" x 2 1/2" shoes, and the 2068 hold down springs. Disc brakes in front. This is a 2wd 1973 f250, wheelbase about 132" more or less"

I would still be curious to know, if that spring on the end of the cable is available just by itself. Or even if the cables are sold anywhere.

If the spring isn't pictured by itself, it was only furnished with the cable.
1973/75 F250 Regular Cab 2WD with 12" x 2 1/2" rear brakes:

D3TZ-2A635-H .. Right Rear Parking Brake Cable - 73 13/32" long / Obsolete

KAMA OBSOLETE PARTS in East Bethel MN has 1 = 763-434-0123.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
D3TZ-2A635-G .. Left Rear Parking Brake Cable - 79 13/32" long / Obsolete

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

I looked on ebay, no one has either of these part numbers, but some people are selling Dorman cables (sold by auto parts stores).

The thing is, they don't say which F250's they're for. You have to be very careful with ebay sellers, as many don't have a clue what their parts fit, even if they're NOS w/a part number.

Click on the pic twice to enlarge it.

Bill, I called East Bethel MN. He has the right-hand cable and he says he probably has the left one too. I didn't buy one from him so he still has both.

I'm going to stick (that's a pun) with the old one as it seems to be working okay.

Thanks for the part number, and for putting me in touch with Marty. Nice people.
