Drum Brake Self-Adjusters

I'm doing a brake job on my '81F100. The rear brake self-adjuster cables are frayed and both of the cable guides are shot. Rather than trying to find these parts, I'm thinking of just not using them. Question is: do I still need to use the lever and spring for the bottom of the brake shoes? I think that spring is still needed, but I'm not all that sure. Am I correct? Or can I just do away with the whole self-adjuster system? Thanks for any advice. I appreciate the help!

I wouldn't do away with the adjusters. You can buy an adjuster kit at a parts store which will have the adjuster and cable and a few other pieces. They don't cost much.

I agree with brown. for $20, you can have them replaced, all brand new. someone did away with them on my 2wd, and you'd have to crawl under and adjust them every month or two in order to have brakes..

But, if you must, you can just do away with the lever. the spring is needed to keep the adjuster in place along with keeping the bottom of the shoes together.

Thanks

Well it turns out all the parts are needed. The cable keeps tension on the adjusting lever, which keeps the star-wheel from 'free-wheeling'. Rather than trying to 'guess' at the correct spring to use in place of the original spring/lever combination, I just put everything back together as it came. Oh, just doing away with the lever will not work because the spring would then be way too short. Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it!
