$1,000 for the Mad Ramps. 1,400 lb max weight rating. I suspect that when my Ranger 900XP is ready to ride that the weight is more than 1,400 lbs. Still, having a ramp solution along with a no-weight-on-tailgate solution is handy.

I bet they don't have a 3" shank.
I just spoke to Dan at Mad-Ramps. He's working on a 2.5" receiver option. He expects it will be ready by the end of the summer. I have a trailer to use for now but this has certainly caught my attention. When the 2.5" receiver option is ready I may take the plunge.
I have had ~600 lbs on the edge of the tailgate (with step). But this was only when unloading a ~600 lbs box (metal gazebo), not driving down the road. The tailgate is pretty strong but the loads it will see when driving down the road while hitting bumps can be significantly higher. Loading and unloading you will also need to watch how much weight gets put on the tailgate.
If the ford ramp are good for 1600 lbs, I would guess the tailgate can handle at least half that. Safety factors and all other things, 1600 lbs static would make sense. Dynamic load, 150 and a hitting a bump that causes a 10 G shock load and your at 1500 lbs. 10 G's is easy to get to if you are not really careful.
Yes Ford has to worry about liability so I can understand them stating that. I have an ATV now and transport it with the wheels on the tailgate but a side by side is a few hundred pounds heavier.
A few hundred pounds? Your SxS is TWICE the weight of my 700cc Yamaha Grizzly 4x4 EPS.
If the tires were closer to or at the point where the tailgate meets the bed, I'd have no problem with it. But putting half the weight of your 1,400 pound SxS at the bitter end of the tailgate? No way in hell would I do that.
