I'm asking about loading a 4 wheeler into the bed. Everyone has been hesitant when i mention loading it into the truck bed, for fear the light tailgate can't handle the weight. I have ramps, of course. When i brought the 4 wheeler home, i loaded it and unloaded from a ditch where the weight wouldn't be so extreme, i guess.
Can the tailgate handle the weight of a 4 wheeler (honda rancher) to be loaded straight from the ground?
Search "Tailgate Load Limit". There's lots of discussion and real world experiences in the thread. I tried to copy and paste the link but I guess that's above my pay grade. The last post was a couple of months ago. Good luck.
Can’t find a specific load spec for the tailgate when the vehicle is stationary. The tailgate step is rated for 350 lbs. The OM says the optional tailgate bed ramps are rated for 800 lbs.
From what I've read - and not just Ford but also Ram/Chevy, you'll have a hard time if not impossible time getting an actual manufacture answer because they don't want to take on liability... basically afraid of people "overloading" their tailgate when down and then blaming the manufacturer for whatever disaster follows.
Generally speaking I've seen most comments across 1/2T, 3/4T etc giving guidance of ~500lbs on the high side. Take it for what its worth, just another random internet post
Of course you can load/unload it......I do it with mine all the time. Its held patio blocks, rolls of sod along with me on it. No worries, its not made of paper.

I have a honda Rincon 650 with bigger tires. And I’m 190lbs. I load and unload my Atv with 80” Heavy duty single piece ramps from tractor supply.
I have never had a problem. Tailgate seems sturdy with outany signs of flexing.
I don't understand the concern here,...Ford even offers a ramp kit from the factory, just for this purpose. Btw, its just the ramps, not a heavy duty tailgate lol.
I know, I read the same thing you did. And also, the Ford ramps are designed to rest onto the tail gate...........so again, yes, the tail gate will hold it.
