Got a new set of door locks and keyed alike ignition switch for my 66. door locks were super easy to replace however the ignition switch is fighting me. From what I have read in the manual its just a push in and twist to remove, is it common for these to stick? I can twist it and can feel the little side pins unlock but it wont come out of the bezel. any advise would be greatly appreciated.
If you don't have the key you won't be able to rotate the cylinder for removal. It will have to be drilled out instead. Start with a small (1/8') bit and gradually increase. Drill maximum depth of 13/16" or else you will destroy the switch. Did it on mine a while back.
Or...give your old doorlock to a locksmith and ask him to make a key.
Absolutely the best way to do that if the locks still match. There is a number on the door lock that the locksmith can use to make a key. Take the one from the passenger side because that side doesn't get used much and is usually in good shape.
As noted, w/out the key assembly will have to be drilled out. I have never been able to drill out the key assembly from the damagine the switch, suggest replace both but recommend removing and inspect other components; bell shaped spacer, spring, bezel, etc. In addition, in the event decide to recondition the horn assembly best to order components at same time, particularly 'horn brushes' requires 2, one at the turn signal switch and the other inserts into insulator in the steering wheel, seem to recall replacement parts run $20-$30.
Once the key assembly has been removed hold the bezel from the front and press and turn the switch assembly from the back and pay attention in the order the components fit together. Take a few minutes and study how the key assembly fits into the switch, I found it best to install the switch then the key assembly, key should be in same position as it was when removed, ACC.
thanks for the input, drilled out the old cylinder and got the new set in place. slowly but surely coming together. hopefully be back on the road soon!
I was missing the key in my donor cab for the ignition. Believe it or not, a you tube video of a kid (maybe 10 years old) explaining how to pick a lock, showed me to take a metal strip, bend it, and use to turn the cylinder to remove. He taught an old dog a new trick!!
