Bone stock '06 with 150k miles. Top plastic end tank blew the end tank seal so I replaced the radiator...also replaced the tstat (w/oem) and water pump (w/new NAPA Tru Flow) while I was at it.
Now I notice on my SG2 the ect fluctuates more frequently then it did before. It will now fluctuate from 191-198° depending on throttle application all within 2 munutes of driving. Deltas are great and steady between 7-10°. No loss of coolant or degradation in performance, runs great.
Is this just due to a variance with the new parts (tstat, wp, radiator)? My ECT used to be more stable and took longer to change while driving is why I ask.
I would venture to guess the new t stat is not holding as tight a range, assuming you have driven it enough to get all the air pockets worked out.
I would just run it as long as all else is good.
Thank you. Been driving it a couple weeks now and even opened the cap while running a couple times in case of air pockets.
Just not used to seeing the ECT bounce up and down from 191-200° that rapidly on the SG2. Today it went from 192° to 202° then back to 193° in less than a minute (90° ambient) in stop and go driving around town. In the past it would hold steady at ~194° in similar conditions.
Hmm, mine fluctuates, sometimes quickly, but I'm almost always pulling a trailer and have a heavy flatbed so my numbers don't equate to most trucks here. It's also a 450. As long as the delta looks good, I'd just keep driving. but then, I'm Bonehead, and I run through trucks, a different one every year or so. Buy broken, fix, and use for a little while then sell for a small profit and go to the next one. That way they're always free.
I stopped using Motorcraft stats for this reason, I have 4 in my junk box. I'm using a Stant now and others have had good luck with IH. The Stant runs 190-192 unless in traffic or towing, then it bumps up to 196.
I would ask what radiator. I replaced radiators in both my granddaughters Escape and Lincoln LS with aftermarket, both while being a well known brand came in with less tubes. With the Lincoln I’ve noticed it does not cool quite as well at elevated temps in the mid summer. It’s fine, just not as well as OE under the temp and workload, so I see variation.
We used to run brake fluid boil tests at Townes Pass heading downhill, and while we were the cooling guys were doing the same but running uphill with a trailer. The OE guys try to build for worst case, aftermarket for price. This is why I’m asking about the radiator.
Thanks everyone. It is a Spectra Premium branded radiator from Autozone, had to buy one same day so not many choices when I purchased it.
I just got done with a 5hr drive and it appears I may of lost ~1/4 inch of coolant from the new degaus tank over the last 2 weeks. There is a faint smell of coolant sometimes, but I can't find any leaks. The coolant bubbles in the 'back' of the degaus tank but that may just be circulation I assume.
