alright guys, a friend of mine referred me to you a'm blowing ll, need some help. everytime i start the 03 fx4 f150 5.4l, drive about 2 miles down the road, i begin to over heat. i've replaced the water pump, thermostat, and cap on surge tank. the problem went away for awhile, but is now back worse than ever. before i was able to allow the truck to warm up at idle and i would have no problem, but now , no matter what or when i drive i'm blowing coolant out of my tank, after about a minute and half a gallon of the freeze, it cools down and i can go about my trip. No coolant in oil or theother way, am i looking at a head gasket? or am i getting air into the system from some other component? thanks all, gimmie your best.
A common problem is the heater core stopping up from corrosion. Check the hoses going into the firewall on the passenger side for a noticeable temp difference.
Also check the thermostat in a pot of boiling water with a thermometer. If the thermostat is stock replacement it should start to open at 190 and be fully open around 202 degrees. Also pick up a failsafe thermostat.
Remember to purge the air out of your system by placing the front of the truck on ramps or elevate the front end, let the truck warm up to operation temp to alow the thermostat to open, make sure the cap is off. The trapped air will come out as big bubbles and when the bubbles have stopped the trapt air has been released.
And if you think it is air in the system and purging doesnt work, drive to an auto parts store and get a combustion gas sniffer to test if you have exhaust gases in the coolant. If you do its most definitly a headgasket
Firestorm, I am experiencing the same problem with my 97 F-150, 4x4, 4.6l V8. MY temp gage goes to hot and the fail safe cooling light comes on but after about a minute gage goes back to normal and light goes out. I can then continue on down the road. If you figure it out before I do let me know, I'll do the same.
