Oil pump replacement

I was wondering if anyone here has ever changed the oil pump in a 2.9 liter. Mine is pretty much gone, and I'm getting conflicting info. I pretty much just need to know if I for sure need to pull the motor to swap it out. I've read that some people just drop the pan where it sits and pull it out of the way, but I've also seen some people saying that is like 100% for sure a way to mess EVERYTHING up. I'm just curious if anyone has any input on the subject.

Thanks!

I bought an ‘89 B2 this past Fall and was told about a knock in the engine. I sloooooooowly got around to removing the oil pan after I got it running. You could probably replace the oil pump with it still in the truck but you’d be better off if you had the means to remove the engine.

As a side note : I gave up on this forum. There is very little if any input here. I asked a question about gauges being interchangeable with the 1st gen Explorer and never got a response.
