New oil pump install question

68 f250 390...some of you know truck has sat for 13yrs or so...got her running for a few off carb cleaner...my question is..is it difficult to replace the oil pump. I'll do some more research...I plan on doing new timing chain and gear and water pump. Also will drop oil pan and make sure its clean. Also is the high volume oil pump needed for stock application? This is my first "classic" and I'm just trying to get her to run cheaply. Not a classic restore project.

Or should I not fool with it? And leave the oil pan on but change the pump? I'd hate to throw a beating or something.

High output oil pump is important if drag racing and spinning above 6000, that kind of thing. Like a lot of speed equipment it will often cause trouble for street drivers.

Yeah I'm going to stay with stock setup. From what I've read it seems to be a pain to remove the oil pan still on the truck but I want to make sure its clean.

The M57HV is the preferred oil pump. Remember this is a high volume pump and not high pressure. The FE engines need a large oil supply not necessarily a lot of pressure. Be warned replacing the oil pump in the truck is a PITA.

That's what I meant about high volume...but I went ahead a ordered the stock replacement which is just part number m57 I believe..should I return it and get the high volume one? I already removed the oil pump...wasnt to bad since I removed the fuel pump as well. But I ordered a new shaft for the oil pump as well. Call me dumb but when I took off the oil pump I didn't see any shaft...I'll research it more.

I looked it up and found it's under the distrubitor. For the oil pump shaft. However I have no idea how to change it. But do I really need to? With a new stock oil pump. I'd like to change the shatt but what are the chances of it being bad or go bad soon?

The shaft is retained by a star washer. The distributor needs to be pulled. I wouldn't bother changing it. I also wouldn't bother changing the old pump for a new stock replacement. Pull the 4 bolts and check your pump clearance. I used to blueprint mine when Inwas doing lots of FE builds. The tolerances may be just fine.

I already have a new oil pump. But I'm not sure what you mean by check clearance with the old pump if I was keeping it.

I dont want to pull the dist. If I don't have to. But a new oil pump should be ok with the current shaft in the engine correct? Only 67k miles but has sat a long time

You need to pull the new pump apart and check for clearances and left over debris. You never install a oil pump without proper cleaning. Don't end up in the low oil pressure club. They unfortunately end up in the 5% that accidentally ends up with an oil pump that has a burr in the bypass valve or oil/air is flowing past the bottom plate, and their warmed up oil pressure is in the basement. Care should be taken and a oil pump is no different. Here is the specs I have from the M57HV pumps, same clearance applies to the M57.

And what should the clearance be.

I've never had to pull one apart before. Always bolt and go. But I'm safe using the old shaft since I'm not thrilled about removing it?

So you haven't pulled the oil pan? Getting the pump in and out is not easy with one hand. You only have 3 inches of room. That's with jacking the engine all the way up.

Correct I have not removed the oil pan yet. I just got all the parts at 5pm. I do not have a engine lift so I'm going to wait until I purchase one probably next week or so to do this job...I already removed the radiator and fan for replacing. It will be a big job to remove the oil pan but I feel it needs to be done...better safe than sorry in my opinion. Any tips on how to remove the pan?

Sure, you won't be able to use a cherry picker. You will be able to use a floor jack and a 2x4 from the front oil pan lip. Take the nuts off the engine mounts and raise up. Put blocks of wood between the engine mounts and the perches. Take all the oil pan bolts off and drop the pan to the cross member. Now find a way to remove the oil pump, drop it into the pan and slide the whole thing out of the truck. Clean all the gasket surfaces and check your new oil pump and put new oil pump in the pan and slide it back in place. It's not fun doing the pan because the oil pump is always in the way.
