I have a 2017 F250 6.7. The display to the right of the tachometer showing which gear I am in comes on only about 40% of the time. I didn't even know it had this feature for the first two weeks I had the truck. It seems to always be on when I shift into manual. The display also seems to go out when I accidently shift too far and put it in manual, then back to drive. It stays out for a couple of days then comes on for a week then goes back out. It always works when I have time to take it to the dealer. Any thoughts?
The gear indicator numbers (1-6) can be turned on/off with the plus (+) button on the shift stalk. Is it possible you are hitting that button unintentionally?
When you're in drive they only appear if you use the + and - buttons on the shift column. They're there to lockout higher gears. If you just single tap the - (when the gears aren't showing) it will show you all the gears, and the one its currently in. As long as you leave it in that position, all the gears will show, even if you restart the vehicle. If you see all 6 gears, and then tap the + button, the lockout display will disappear.

Manual mode they're always there.
Good to know, thanks. For the first 2 weeks the gears were never displayed (other than manual mode). Then they randomly started showing up and haven't gone away since. Was wondering how that happened and was hoping they would not disappear. Now I know what to do if they do, thanks!
You can turn that display on or off using the +/- on your gear shift. I always like to see what gear I am in so I leave mine turned on. It is not a problem with the OP's truck, he just must have hit the rocker switch one too many times and toggled it off.
