I bought the one harbor freight sells. Havent tore down my heads yet, but i did stick it on a valve to make sure it would and seems like it will work well. Was a little less than $20 and its the screw type.

I just pulled my 1st spring off with the Auto Zone loan a tool. This is the one I used:
Amazon Amazon

I might be having the same problem you are - my valve sills have become brittle and the plastic is flaking apart. Good luck!

I got that one as well. Haven't used it on an IDI, but I changed the valve seals on my 390 and it worked fine. Have to find a sweet spot for the hooks to grab the bottom of the springs without popping off, but got the hang of it after the first two or three.

That's a good warning; I couldn't possibly add up the times I nearly choked to death on a valve spring compressor before I was three.

This is why I always play it safe, and never let my kids rebuild my heads until they are at least six years old.
