Can valve stem seals be replaced without pulling the heads?

I suspect my valve stem seals are shot, based on the fact the way that the engine seems to "load up" with oil when sitting idling.

I've have a valve spring compressor for gassers that can be used to remove the vavle springs with the heads still on the block. They look like this

Anbody know if there is a heavy-duty version that will handle the bigger springs on our IDIs? Anbody ever done this on their IDI?

Never done it, but if you can put shop air in through the glow plug hole to hold the valves up and get the springs off, the answer should be yes.

Definately the right tool for that job (instead of the prybar equivalent), I just got that exact one and works great. Might be a challenge fitting it on near the firewall though.

Along with new seals..... new keepers would be a good choice. Keep a magnet handy for retrieving the keepers...... ensure they do not go places you may regret....pushrod holes and drain back holes!!!!!!!

Why is it those pesky little items like keepers always go to the exact location you don't want them to go?

Just like when you drop a wrench, it has to stop in the exact center of the vehicle.

Murphy did know what he was talking about when he wrote Murphy's Laws.

That pisses me off to no end. And it only reaches the ground if your LUCKY, usually I have you grow another few joints in my arm to find that 9/16th open end that is hiding under the engine mount on the engine crossmember

Oh the suspence when a tool gets away............waiting for the sound of it to hit the concrete or get stuck in some greasy part of the frame..........

To prevent the keepers from falling into the drainback of pushrod holes, it might be a good idea to jamb a rag into those locations just in case one of the keepers gets away.
