Drove it all day today nothing has seized melted down or blown up. I guess whoever had has those hubs out last (not me...) put em in wrong because I turned that piece around from how they were when I pulled them out.
I also noticed when testing the lock outs on each side with a wheel off the ground that i got a real distinct click and kaboing that I never got before.

That's the best way to check the hubs. I could not remember how that ring goes, it's been too long since I had one apart. I thought it was made with that smooth inset so the plastic piece from the lockut had a nice place to go when it pushed on the ring, but I can't remember how it all fits together.
Thanks Franklin im still scratching my head a little over this one but im going to take one side off and and have a look at all the components when I get time. It dawned on me that taking some time to mesh and look at all of the components when I'm not in a hurry it will make sense one way or the other. It's not a big deal to get the hubs out I've got the two snap ring routine down now.
I'm now 100% convinced I got it right. I had the passenger side off to take the beauty ring off so I took the hub out and looked at everything. No doubt the recessed part of the interior part faces out. When I press it in I get full engagement.
And...I can see where the gears are buggered up from whoever had these apart before had that piece in backwards
