When I bought my truck it had an electric fuel pump wired to switched 12V. It was held onto the frame near the location of the mechanical lift pump with 1 sheet metal screw.

I ditched that setup on day 1. An electric fuel pump should be mounted as close to the fuel tank as possible. Between the fuel tank select switch and water separator on our trucks. They push fuel, not pull it. Here's a good fuel pump design that you can get anywhere (Jegs, Summit, Amazon, NAPA, etc.):

I've heard of guys installing this type of manual pump between the mechanical lift pump and the fuel filter. It would be handy if you ran out of fuel or changed the fuel filter and forgot to put fuel in it.

Really, there's no need for an electric fuel pump if your lines and hoses are in good condition. We all understand the MAWs though.

You mentioned your system currently has a leak. Where is it? Were you able to fix it?

If fuel is leaking then there's a chance you're getting air intrusion which will effect your driveability. Our Bullnose trucks are notrious for leaking at the water separator. Here's what I used to replace my stock water separator:

https://www.amazon.com/GOLDENROD-496-3-WATER-BLOCK-FILTER-Filter/dp/B0000AXE6C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525119393&sr=8-1&keywords=goldenrod+water+filter&dpID=41hGdRjynbL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch https://www.amazon.com/GOLDENROD-496-3-WATER-BLOCK-FILTER-Filter/dp/B0000AXE6C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525119393&sr=8-1&keywords=goldenrod+water+filter&dpID=41hGdRjynbL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Another place to look for air intrusion is at the hoses between the fuel sending units and fuel tank select switch. If those haven't been serviced then they're undoubtedley dry rotted, Your mechanical pump probably draws air right through the wall of the hose.

Anyways, I feel like a salesman. Good luck with your truck.

i never had any luck with those in line e-pumps, they never lasted more than a month or so, even with limited use. . i now only use a facet duralift pump.
the duralift in my 88 has been in it for 11 years now.

I've never been able to get a low quality pump to last more than a few weeks on these beasts. The only thing that has lasted years is the Facet Duralift e-pump.

I prefer it over the lift pump. I highly recommend not using the epump as a priming pump for a failing lift pump. it will lead to lift-pump failure and possibly filling your crankcase with diesel fuel. If you go e-pump, I would recommend deletiing or bypassing the liftpump. The advantage of the epump is that you can purge the air out of the lines MUCH easier than cranking the liftpump over and over and over.

Here's were I located my epump. The previous poster is correct that it's better to put these near the tank or selector valve, to "push" instead of "pull."
