Please Help !!

Hello everyone , first of all thank you to everybody on here . it. has always ben a tremendous amount of help using this forum.
my 78 Ford f150 Ranger has a 351M Has an oil leak coming from the engine oil filter.
at first I thought it was the filter so I decided to change the oil since it was just about due and I changed the filter.
But the oil still. leaks from the filter especially when on the gas pedal when pressure increases??

Is a seal from an old filter stuck to the pad on the block?

Might be an oil filter adapter of some sort between the block and filter, which might need a gasket or O-ring or something.

^^ those are the two obvious causes. I'd bet on the rubber seal from an old filter being stuck on the block.

That was another reason why I decided to change the filter maybe thinking the filter or gasket was bad .
when I removed the old filter I took a look at the gasket that was being used and it had a odd shape almost as if had a another lip to.
I then double checked and made sure there wasn't another seal stuck to the engine block.
so that cancels those two out. and also when I removed the filter it didn't look like there was any sort of adapter as well

Clean off the engine's oil filter mounting surface.

A little oil on the new filter's rubber gasket works wonders.

Hand tighten the new filter....then try to back it off 1/8 of a turn.

Did the oil filter looked Balooned? Like someone was blowing it up. Possibly your oil pressure relief valve is sticking and not relieving enough pressure.

Normally it's inside the pump body itself. The ones I'm familiar with are a simple spring and disc sort of arrangement. Not sure if that is the same as our pumps or not, but no matter what if you have a pumped up filter that's distorted, you have a problem!

What does your oil pressure gauge read when the engine is running?
What weight oil are you running?
How long have you known this motor? Got it's history and oil change frequency in other words? Just wondering if it's been overheated, or perhaps gone long between changes and some gunk has built up.
Or if the PCV system has not always been maintained either.

Good luck. Hope it's simple.
I would not hesitate to run a solvent type oil additive at this point, but probably the recommended course of action is going to be removing the pump and either fixing or replacing it.
Wait for the others on that score though. Seen it happen, but never had to deal with it myself.

Is your engine vented to atmosphere? Mine was pushing oil anywhere it could find easy escape, turns out my breather was blocked off. Opened it up and never a drop since.

I'm not sure about the 351M-400s, but with the FEs the pressure relief valve is in the oil pump. We had an old 360 blow the filter off a couple times before the oil pump finally gave out and the engine threw a rod. I obviously didnt know what the issue was at the time. If cleaning and sealing the mating surface doesn't work, you may want to look at replacing the oil pump. Keep an eye on your oil pressure, carry extra oil and filter until you get it figured out just in case you have some sort of failure like I described.

And it has to be building some pretty serious pressure to balloon a filter as well. Guessing crazy pressure to blow your filter off fordguy!
I'm sure there are some weak filter housings out there, but a '66 Corvette 327 my brother had was pushing 90-100 psi upon first startup when cold, and never even fazed the filters on it.
Not sure what it takes to turn a filter into a projectile, but it can't be a good sign.

Are you sure something above it is not leaking down on it ? Is it holding normal oil psi ?

hello everyone so update on the oil leak, I got a little desperate when I couldn't find the oil pressure relief valve so I took the truck to a local mechanic pointed out that it appeared to be leaking from the fuel pump, so I changed the fuel pump and also changed the oil and the oil filter and it worked ! Thanks Everyone for the all the information I appreciate it !

Great to get rid of a leak. So it was the fuel pump after all, similar to what mark a. was suggesting.
Glad you got it fixed. And the engine should be happy from having had it's share of fresh oil lately too!
