Keyless entry

I've done some searching and can’t seem to find a definitive answer. 2004 excursion 6.0 powerstroke. My key fobs randomly decided to stop working one day. Changed the batteries no luck. I’ve tried to reprogram with no luck. The lock/unlock on the doors works fine. The auto lock when I start driving still works and the key pad on driver door still works. What could it be?

I’m really close to just going with an aftermarket option that gives me remote start and better range because the key fobs had terrible range to begin with. If anybody has any recommendations that would be great as well.

I know the OEM has limited range. If the batteries are new you can try wiping the contact surfaces on the inside PCB and rubber pads.
Also try holding it up by your chin, this seems to work from farther away.
Have a VIPER brand in the Ex it has good range and has the remote start.

I know this is going to sound stupid but did you remove the sticker from the bottom of the battery? Speaking from experience 😫

The common denominator is the Vehicle Security Module (VSM).

I have had this problem since purchasing my 2000, 7.3l, EX.....no rhyme or reason......I program the FOB's.....They work great for a week or so, and then stop working.

Found no solution and no one had any recommendations when I posted on this very topic several years ago.

Please post what you find!!!

Wouldn’t the keypad not work if the VSM was bad?

Could just be the FOB receiver portion that's acting up.
