Hi everyone. I'm posting on behalf of my hubby, who has a 97 Expedition XLT.
The other day, he's sitting in traffic minding his own business when suddenly the doors locked. Weird. He thinks "maybe someone has a transmitter on the same frequency as mine". A couple of minutes later, the doors unlock themselves. Even more weird.
After getting home, he realizes that the keyless entry fobs on both his & my keychains have stopped working.
He's tried:
[ul]
pulling the battery cable and letting it sit for several minutes
checking all the fuses (replaced one for the cig lighter that had been burnt out for at least a year)
[/ul]
Any suggestions on getting the key fobs to start working again?
You can try reprogramming the FOBS. What you do is have all the fobs on hand to program, get into the vehicle and close the door. Put the key into the ignition and turn the key on then off 5 times (don't start the vehicle), leaving the key in the on position the last time. If you have done this correctly, the door locks will lock and unlock quickly. Then immediately press one of the buttons on one fob. The door locks will then lock and unlock quickly again. Press a button on the other fob and repeat until all fobs are programmed. Turn the ignition off and the fobs should now work. If not, maybe you have a dead battery in a fob or there is something else wrong with the system.
Before reprogramming, try disconnecting the battery (under the hood- not the FOB battery ;-) ) for 15 minutes or so. If the fobs still don't work, try reprogramming. If that doesn't work, the "General Electronics Module" (GEM) may have a problem.
Aaron - you rule. My hubby was back in the house so quickly, that I didn't think he even tried it. Goodness knows how much the dealer would have wanted to do the same thing.
Glad to hear you got it working. I had the dealer quote me $30 to do that, so I called another dealer, and he told me the procedure over the phone. It's amazing what some dealers will try to charge you for.
