2016 6.7. Just pick this truck up filled tank. But display says237 miles to empty. Truck only has 9,000 miles was wondering if there is away to reset it or need to go to dealer. I'm hoping I get more than 237 miles to a tank. Average 18 mpg on the way home about a 60 mile trip.
If you do alot of around town stop and go driving and get 11 mpg, then make a 100 mile highway trip at a steady speed and get 18 mpg, the miles to empty will adjust as you’re driving. You may drive, say ten actual miles, but the “miles to empty” may only decrease by one mile in that time because it’s making adjustments to the calculation
Disconnected the battery's and reconnected now shows 288 to empty. Last week the dealer put in 3/4 of a tank and it showed 94 miles to empty. I will see how this reset works. Thanks for the input.
I know it's extremely hard to not take the "miles to empty" as gospel. As others have said, it constantly adjusts based on driving habits. Try to use the gas gauge and use "miles to empty" as a guide.

On my '12 K/R, to reset you just hold down the OK button with the display in the "Fuel Economy" mode.
On my '08 that I had, the gas gauge was poorly placed and always blocked by the steering wheel, so all I ever use is the MTE display. Old habits are hard to break.
You need to take time to read your owner's manual on DTE. There are two modes, for for hauling, one for not hauling. IT will change as you drive. It is a computed distance. Best thing to do is not worry about it.
With my 65 gallon Titan tank, mine show 999 miles to empty for over 250 miles if not towing.
The computer takes your last mpg reading and adjusts miles to empty based upon the position of the fuel level. If you fill it then the computer will figure mileage based upon your last tank driving habits. If you were driving in town and getting 10 mpg then the fill up will be based on 10 mpg. If you go highway and get to 18 or so for that tank then your next fill up will again be based on your previous fuel mileage. Also, you will notice on the highway that the miles to empty will slow down. You may drive two miles and only drop one mile based on the decreased fuel consumption at that time.
FWIW, I would be skeptical of its accuracy anyway. I generally fill up and take 20 gallons of fuel. The miles to empty for me is generally around 25 miles. So with 25 miles left I still have around 6-8 gallons still in the tank.
On my last truck (2011 F150) the dte was always a little off. It was normally off on the side of I had more fuel. They are programmed to the size of your tank and most of the time they are set a little below what a full tank is, like set to 35 gallons if you have a 40 gallon tank as to give you a "reserve." One great tool you can use is forscan. You can check how its programmed in there and make adjustments to save you money instead of going to the dealer.
I always reset trip "A" so i can track how much fuel I have used from the 65 gallon tank. I do not worry about the DTE and rarely check it. I know when I have used 50 gallons of fuel on a trip, it is time to start looking at Gas Buddy to see what is ahead of me that is reasonable priced fuel. I have used as much as 60 gallons of the 65 and it never skipped a beat.
My trust in predicted range goes up as the remaining range gets smaller. My truck does not have MTE, but other vehicles in my stable do.
100 miles, I notice. 50 miles, I'm more aware. At 25 miles remaining, I'm looking for a station.
But I really don't like going below a quarter tank, so it rarely gets to that point. And my truck tank is 67 gallons. My credit card usually cuts off long before the tank is full.
Just yesterday, I left my house with about 20 MTE. That's about as low as I ever let it get. There is a gas station about 6 miles from my house, the only fuel stop on the way to my destination about 20 miles away. Of course, I was about 3 miles past the station when my display read "You dumba$$, you forgot to get gas!". Instead of turning around, I risked it and made it with 1 MTE. I put 33.5 gallons in my 35 gallon tank. That's closer than I ever want to cut it and hope I never have a brain fart like that again.
