Noisy

This truck is god-awful loud. Like pushing 100 db+ with the windows down driving next to a wall (bouncing sound back my way) and conservative throttle.

I have the following items contributing:

- GTP38R (loud but not bad compared to diesel cackle)
- 160/30 single shots (I read these were louder at idle and the same as stock while driving... I am having the opposite experience. Louder when driving and more quiet at idle)

And the following items which should be negating:

- New shift boots (inner and outer)
- XLT interior (pretty sure there is sounded deadener under carpet)
- FRX & HPX
- Synthetic 15W40 and archoil additive in that and the fuel
- Injectors were "hot torqued"
- Got rid of the 5" exhaust in exchange for a 4" with muffler. Most noise does not seem to be cab drone.

Next options:
- Drop the tank and H&H... though I have no current issues with the tank or with fuel that I'm aware of
- New steering shaft firewall seal (can see light through mine, this won't do **** with windows down)
- I hear there are Excursion "kick panels" - does anyone have a picture or a link to what these look like?
- Will tuning effect this at all?
- Am I missing anything obvious?

I already have some hearing loss from being a dip**** in my 20s and don't want to make it worse. What do?

I have a 99 F250 7.3 Crew cab. Stock injectors (hot torqued after new orings), hutch and harpooned tank, Riffraff FRX, HPX, stock turbo, DPTuner, new RR intercooler boots and too much more cap to list. Yep.. Still very loud. My opinion is it's the nature of the beast.

I don't know if it's the older trucks or the manual tranny but my 02 with automatic is extremely quiet. The only thing I did was the door seal mod but that was mainly to stop the door "thunk" on rough roads that twist the crew cab body and it took care of that very well.

have you checked the uppipes on your truck? if they leak bad enough they can be source for alotta noise.

tuning can be a big contributor to noise too. my truck on DP tunes was like a jackhammer. GH solved most of that prior to Kenton taking over tuning.

Answer to both is yes... I saw no mention of your tuning, but I suspect the following:

I have that tee shirt, it's in the drawer with the rest of em'.

You can insulate the valve covers and exhaust - that will really tame the noise down. Good luck finding material that withstands the punishment, but I hear the VCs can be coated with a high-temp bed liner, and I know the exhaust can be wrapped. I also know resonators work... but not as well as wrapping.

My single shots are the same. A little louder idle but once they start doing work it's like a garbage truck under the hood. And with the windows down...forgetaboutit. And I thought my tinnitus was bad before I got these injectors.

Several things have been mentioned but a few other options are sound deadening in the cab (Dynamat, etc.), tuning, and go back to split shots. Some of them are more viable than others.

Thanks fellas.

Tuning is through GH. I am unsure of who is actually tuning but I have a few change requests in with them already re: smoke... I'll request they see about making it more quiet too.

I have an H&H kit ready to go in once I run my tank low. I'll also look into beefing up the door seals. I'll look into viable valve cover coatings too!

Perhaps the H & H mods will take care of some of the noise. Let us know on that one.

First thought is air in the fuel. That can be plenty loud. FRx should help a lot, but depends how much air is getting sucked up. Agreed with above, Hutch and Harpoon mods. Even if not the Cure for your noise issue every truck should get these mods for reliability. How is the fuel pressure? Is the sound new?

Here's a good thread with sound deadening info, with pics of the various extra panels used on the Excursion. Grab a cold one, it's a long read.

The rubber hose pulled into the door seals really helps. Gives the doors a nice secure sounding clunk when closing too. Other tips; be sure the latex tubing is the correct thickness or the seals will be too thick and the door will be tough to close. Do not use petroleum based lube or the hose will dissolve. Get a continuous roll if you can; you need lengths sufficient to do an entire door seal. A bunch of 5-6 foot sections adding up to 50 feet is useless.
This roll This roll
looks about right.

Good luck!

So, last night after work my wife and I drove almost 6 hours round trip to pick up a new to us dinette for our new to us 5th wheel. As we were cruising up the interstate at 65 MPH, we were able to have a conversation at normal speaking volume with no problems. Even easier at the slow state highway speeds of around 55 MPH. Both in 5th gear, but sometimes in 4th gear on the 55 MPH roads.

Accelerating to get into the next gear we would tend to hold our thoughts and words until the higher/desired gear was selected.

Remember that I have a ZF6 as well and I can tell with 90% certainty that the white sound deadener boot under the shifter is split and probably not sitting correctly over the handle mount. I also have the modifications in my signature for a comparison sake. Our truck will never sound like a newer 6.7, but I like it that way. Yesterday morning I went out to start the truck and let it warm up. I then went back in to finish getting ready. A few moments later when I left the house again to go to the truck which was about 60 yards from the house, I smiled a bit because I could hear the truck in the driveway.

As David said, I noticed and immediate difference in the tone and volume of the engine after completing the H/H mod. One of my favorite modifications so far because it had a functionality (more fuel and no puking) and cosmetic (sound reduced) effect on the truck.

It is what it is, and we like it.

160/100 singles, good tuning, H&H, and the Lariat package (carpeted floors with sound-deadening in-cab, plus the hood liner)

You could always look into sound proofing the interior of the truck if none of the previous suggestions that have been made work.

7.3's are loud, that's their nature. All the aforementioned mods add some minor dba reduction but don't expect dramatic results. Tuning can make a large difference. The door seal mod was a good one and helped. I recently replaced the steering column seal with the newer double seal version (2C3Z-3D677-AA) and this made a noticeable improvement also. Last would be to apply sound absorption matting/etc to the interior but I'm not up for that level of effort. It is good enough as is.
