I have a 1997 f350 that has been flawless. It was below freezing and cranked truck. Took longer than usual for the wats light to go off and when it started it ran rough and low rpms and the cel came on. I turned it off immediately. Tried to start yesterday and wats light comes on but takes long time to go off then try to crank and nothing. I'm getting smoke out of the exhaust but won't fire at all. Please help as I don't have a code reader to troubleshoot
**MIGHT** be the GPR / GPs, but only if it's a California truck. Federal trucks do not monitor the GP circuit. Look at your GPR. Does one of the big terminals have a metal bar on it, that leads to two more terminals? If so, it's a Cali truck.
Since the CE light came on, you'll need to scan it. Otherwise you're grasping. Do you have a Windows laptop/tablet?
Think I found it looks like an old type solenoid? I noticed that there are quite a few cracks in the body of it. It looks like it's brown plastic or something.
As the madpogue said above you hava CEL likely for another reason not related to the glow plugs. Replace the relay, but if you do use a stancor relay. Its hard to tell you whats wrong as we all are going to be shooting in the dark. I'd guess you lost a sensor or UVCH is shorting out. typically if she starts enough rto rotate on its own even with bad glow plugsit will continue to run and smooth out.
Also look for the shunt on the relay (randomly selected pic below). If it has one, you have a Cali '97 truck, and the CE light MIGHT be for the GP monitoring. If so, be sure to reinstall the shunt, and the CE light MIGHT just reset.
