How tight do you put it on? Hand tight? Or tighter?
Reason Im asking is ever since I changed mine the truck is not starting the same. I put the new one on as tight as I could with my hands. Filled with clean deisel. Truck started right up and ran fine.
The next day I went to start the truck and it sounded like it was going to start but wouldnt. Even had smoke from the exhaust but just wouldnt catch.Same thing this morning.
It does eventually start. Gp's are fine. Any help would be great.
Wait to start light is on for about 8-10 seconds. I checked all glow plugs using test light as read on this site. Ill use a multimeter as I know this test is not fool proof. They are all motorcraft ZD1s that I replaced last spring.
Its a 86 6.9l. I have never had any starting problems before this. Even the coldest mornings it will start. Both batteries are brand new with all brand new cables. Between the batteries, down to the starter. ground straps. I replaced it all.
When its trying to start its more of a greyish black smoke.
How much fuel pedal are you using after setting the fast idle solenoid, key on...... 1/2 3/4 or full pedal. How fast is the engine cranking over..... if you can count RPM it's NOT fast enough.
Thanks for the input. M.L.S.C., not trying to hijick, but could putting ZD-1s in a 88 that is supposed to have ZD-9s cause them to burn out extremely fast. Cuz when I got my 88 the gps worked for a few weeks, and it was supposed to have recently new GP's, but then they burned out fast and quick. So I'm wondering because they guy said something about ZD-1 glow plugs.
Dean, sure you can swap glowplugs, they got the same thread, but their connectors are different - ZD1s are spades, the ZD9s are bullet type - so if you go from one to the other you gotta swap either the harnesses, or the harness end connectors. Look at your harness, see what ends it got, this will tell you what gloplugs are in there.
