His sister was with him as they were going to school, she would have said something. Also, if u read my post you will see that I was asking opinions about reman engines.
Yes, I understand and I think that was pretty well covered and the talk about the option of rebuilding what you have came up.
I guess I would pay the guy a couple hours shop time to pull the heads.
I am from Ontario Canada so that being said, my opinion may not be worth a grain of salt but here goes. I have seen and heard may horror stories about crate engines whether they be Ford, Dodge or GMs. ALL seem to be in the general description of take your chances. My Machinist. Engines From Hal, Has always told me to have
YOUR engine rebuilt if you can. If you can actually see the work and parts going into YOUR engine you will know what you have. Buying a crate motor is like buying a car sight unseen. And as stated above you get what you pay for
Jasper has a pretty good reputation. Worth finding a dealer/installer nearby and see what they have. I have a Jasper reman in a work truck (01 F450 Diesel) and seems to be fine after 4-5 years and 70k miles.
The parts store engines have a poor reputation.
As far as reman vs build your own, pros and cons. If you can R &R the engine at home and find a shop with good reputation may be worth it. Otherwise may not. There is also usually a guarantee of some type with a reman.

Have you ever tied to use that warranty. Some may be ok but I was doing warranty work for a rebuilder out of Seattle, It was like pulling teeth to get anything from them
My friend bought a 400 from Mabbco in Tyler TX (we live in CT). Just a stock long block for his '79 Bronco. He paid somewhere around $1500 shipped to his house. That was a little over 2 years ago and he still drives it today with no issues.
Another friend bought a long block 351W from AZ for $750, didn't last 10k miles. Dropped a valve. We took the head off and found two cylinders were stock bore and two cylinders .010 over. He wasn't pleased with that. So, yeah, you get what you pay for.
Agreed 100%. I had too many comebacks with Autozone rebuilds. A wild guess is they use the lowest bidder on this kind of stuff. Bought two steering racks for Hondas and both leaked on fill up. Oh sure I got my purchase credited but no labor claim. This kind of bs caused me to go to NAPA and no comebacks except a spate of bad alternators and rebuilt water pumps customers bought there and brought in for install. I do not use rebuilt water pumps as new ones are not much more if at all. Oh two rebuilt water pumps failed when the flange on the pump shaft came loose allowing the fan going into the radiator and destroying both. No labor claim, and no radiators replaced by them either. For some time I was tig welding the back of the flange to the shafts to be safe. Hopefully all of the faulty ones are out of their inventory now. ok no more rambling.
Having the truck towed home and this Saturday I am gonna see what I can find out. Hopefully just a top end issue/head gasket or cracked head. I am praying bottom end is good.
By the way could someone tell me what a 514 scat is?
So a 514 scat is making a 460 into race engine?
Reason I ask is I know one that is for sale specifically crank and heads they call Blue Thunder heads which I know nothing about..But sounds like it may be to much engine for daily driver
scat makes a crankshaft that bumps the displacement up to 514 cu-in. then you need different pistons, maybe rods too. certainly makes it bigger but even more parts are needed to call it a real race engine. lots more money too.

Reason: more info
Any info on what blue thunder heads are.
I would like to know what a complete disassembled engine
with the scat cat crank and blue thunder heads are worth?
This will be a long story BUT very informational to the post. I worked as a mechanic for a business that refurbished fire trucks and such. Owner had an ambulance Ford that he sold one weekend, but it needed a motor. I have a good machine shop that I have been using for years. We would have sent it there but the boss said it had to go this weekend, 4 days away, told him only way was to buy a crate engine. There just happened to be a engine rebuilder in town Arrons. Boss picked up engine and I swapped all externals. Put back in ambulance, fired it up and got it running. Test drove 20 miles or so and ran decent. Customer picked up on Sat. and headed home. 30 miles down the road the engine let go. Ambulance was towed back to shop. On Monday I pulled engine again. Boss was not happy took back to Aarons and got another engine. I put back in and got running again. This time drove over 200 miles to test drive. All seemed good. Customer picked up on Sat. This time customer made it 60 miles, had towed again. Guess what on Monday I pulled the engine again. This time Boss was hot, he went to Aarons to give them a piece of his mind. During the chewing the boss mentioned the engine was for an ambulance.. Aarons told him " you should have told us it was for an emergency vehicle. We have someone who knows what they are doing put the engine together." The third engine, the customer made it home, never heard any more about it. we never used them again.
True story.
That being said, worked at another shop and we did not have any trouble with Jasper engines. If I had to buy one for myself I would go with JASPER.
"What they are worth" disassembled is a big unknown. You can search and figure out what they are worth new. But disassembled? Lots of questions depending on condition. Could have some value or could be scrap... <$.10/lb for steel/iron and a little more for AL (cracked, or key wear points shot).
Why are they being sold disassembled?
As a guess, a nicely built but simple high performance stroker from a good shop is $10k. A reman should be a lot less.
The blue thunder heads are actually pretty hard to come by anymore. It's a cast iron sjc head . Can be worth a lot to people running engines in stock limited classes. If they are blue thunder heads and you can get them for a good price, buy them. Even if it's to resell. Then pm me with a price The scat crank if it's new and cast worth maybe three hundred bucks. If it's forged probably six or seven. Can get it off the shelf for about nine. And if it were me and my block was good, I would rebuild. Not buy crate. Apple's to apple's it will cost less.
