I found out today that my engine has dead cylinder, it had a bad miss after what my son said was a big backfire and blew oil cap off and then he saw white smoke. Mechanic found water in one of the cylinders.
So not knowing anything about this engine as I only bought truck less than a year ago. I have decided to just put new motor in and start from there. I could use some opinions on best crate engines, the truck is 77 f150 short bed 4X4 and I just plan to go with a stock engine
nothing over the top. My current engine block code is D9TE-AB so I assume thats what I need to look for?
1. Any thoughts on best re-man engine/crate engine brands?
2. In my search I keep seeing Marine Engine pop up, are Marine engines the same as Truck engine?

My current engine block casting number is: D9TE-ABexternal balance so I assume that's what I need to look for.
I don't have an opinion other than ...I wish 460 crate engines were as cheap at 350 crate engines Of course it seems most crate engines are now built for performance..seem to start at $5k and go up from there, most at $9K for a full 460..bleh.
I did see a couple 460's that were just full pulls from a junkyard for around $2.5k or so. Still a lot for a used motor IMO. More than I paid for my whole truck
Get a look inside yours. If the block, heads and crank are good, get a good local rebuilder to do it. I don't know much about all the "crate" engines out there but I wouldn't waste my money on an over the counter remanufactured engine. You basically get what you pay for.
My friend bought a 400 from Mabbco in Tyler TX (we live in CT). Just a stock long block for his '79 Bronco. He paid somewhere around $1500 shipped to his house. That was a little over 2 years ago and he still drives it today with no issues.
Another friend bought a long block 351W from AZ for $750, didn't last 10k miles. Dropped a valve. We took the head off and found two cylinders were stock bore and two cylinders .010 over. He wasn't pleased with that. So, yeah, you get what you pay for.

thanks in advance for help.
very similar but set up completely different. marine engines are set up for running full power most of the time. cooling systems can be different.
Was your son reving it,s guts out? It might be as simple as a bent valve. Was it a good runner before? Do a compression test first.
Good advice. I've also seen a lot of failed rocker arms over the years and over revving was a likely cause. I had a 400 come in once for a new engine, missing knocking and running like crap. They had broken a rocker arm and kicked a lifter out of the bore causing lost oil pressure. New rocker arm and pushrod, good as ever. Pull the valve covers and have a look.
No he didn't rev it, yes ran fine prior but never had the power I felt it should have. The truck is at my mechanic shop. Due to my work it would take me awhile to do it myself. I do want to know what happend with it, just not sure I want to pay him to find out for me. I did start it up and other than the miss it had sounded fine, no knocking or anything. I know my son said just before it died it popped real loud, he described back fire thru carb.
Well, someone will need to look in it and if you don't have time and don't want to pay someone else, not sure what you are looking for.
BTW, I used to lie to my dad.
No it wouldn,t. But the gasket was probably on it,s way out. Could be a combination of both. Like I said do the comp test and go from there. If all but 1 or 2 of the cylinders are within spec that will give us all a better idea.

His sister was with him as they were going to school, she would have said something. Also, if u read my post you will see that I was asking opinions about reman engines.

I am considering seeing if the mechanic will let me look it over myself before I get a new engine or have that one rebuilt. I don't think he will care since he will be doing removal and install.
