i sent my old windsheild to a glass shop, i got them back today. i had new rubber seals but didn,t open the bags. in the bag there was instructions on how to replace Windows. in the instruction they say to make sure bottom of glass has a curve in it.. so i checked this evening and old glass got about a 1/8 gap in the middle of the curve,on the bottom side of window. and the new cut glass is straight. i didn,t try to install them yet,but i,m wondering if it could be a problem. instruction seemed to say it was important! should i worry about this!!!
the rubbers i got a few years ago from joe,s. and the glass was cut at speedy glass this week. i just don,t know how important it is to have that curvature. i will need help to install Windows,so i,m not sure when but i was planning to do it soon!
Not sure if the curve is needed either but I will say get some help installing them. My wife was on the out side and I was in the cab, she held the glass in with her palms while I worked the rubber around. Saves you from pushing the glass out and damaging it in the process.
After recently dealing with this myself, I've found the curvature at the bottom of the windshield glass is needed to properly seal the outside bottom corners. If the glass is cut straight at the bottom the seal won't be filled completely in this area and will be prone to water leakage.
thanks lew! do you think it would be a big problem. i mean the truck will be kept Inside and i will not be in the rain much. would they have to cut another glass,or is there a way of cutting or grinding it . not sure they would take responsibility, and that they could do it quick!
My windshield leaked with glass that was cut straight across the bottom section. It looked fine due to the overhang of the outside lip of the seal, but water would get up from under the seal at the lower corners due to a gap created between the seal and the cab from the straight cuts.
I once wanted a mirror with a section that looked toward the blind side so I went to a glass shop. They said sure they could do it and the guy proceeded to cut and then sand the small mirror pc to shape. The point of this is that he could sand (I think with a belt sander but never saw the process) the glass and get it the right shape.
Thus I figure these glass pcs could also have the curve sanded in. That is if you still want to have it as per the instructions.
thanks catimann! i phone the glass shop twice today, they have a answering machine. i left a messaged the second time, they didn,t phone back yet. i think its important to be there. i didn,t use a straight edge but the bottom pinch weld seems curved. hope to get answers tommorrow.
got the glass fixed this morning! they buffed or grinded them, didn,t charge anything. i put a straight edge on the bottom lip of the windsheild frame, and there,s a bow in it. now to set up another time to installed them. probably that a straight windsheild will lift the exterior corner ! thanks lew! i hope anybody getting Windows cut make sure its curved. i will post a picture example this weekend.
just to let you guys know, that i,m at my third atemp . rubber twists and the exterior lip stays open, especialy at the top. its the best this time around, but i think i will use urethane to glue the top lip. the middle bar is giving problems seems like the 3 screws holes don,t line up. and there not large enough for the treaded part to slip in.
