'57 Small window rear glass & rubber

I've been trying to figure out how to mount the glass back in the truck for while now. I measured the glass and it's within a 1/16" of the original. I bought a Dennis Carpenter rubber. Still having issues.

When I mount the rubber on the glass, it's loose. Loose to the point of having to balance things while moving the glass so it stays on.

I tried mounting the rubber in the window frame without the glass just to check the fit and this is about as tight as I can get it.

Rubber from Dennis Carpenter & glass from Classic Truck Glass. I've reached out to both, and they've both replied that their products are made to Ford specs. While this may be the case, I've never had this much trouble with a window rubber.

I'm reasonably sure the opening hasn't been monkeyed with... is this how these rubbers are supposed to fit? I've done a few Mustangs and the fit was a bit more snug.

Do you happen to have dimensions for the rubber and the glass?

I bought glass from Classic Truck Glass and the rubber from Dennis carpenter. The glass is the same size as the one I pulled out, but the rubber doesn't fit the glass nor the truck well. Almost like it's about 1.5" too big. Dennis Carpenter only repeats over and over that their rubber is made to ford specs. Before I take the truck to a glass shop and pay them to install it, I want to be sure it's me that's the issue and not that I have MIS-shaped parts.

Just had my windshield and rear window installed on my 60. Guy came to the house said he's been doing customs and street rods over 30 years. My back rubber was long to but not as bad as yours. Yours looks way to long. He said they will shrink. I got my moulding from NPD. It was made by precision and he said he never had a problem with any from that company.

'57 Small window rear glass & rubber

Bill, I have not installed my backglass yet in my 57, but I do remember reading about the rear glass installs from the inside, with the rubber being pulled out over the pinchweld, unlike a windshield, that installs from the outside, with the rubber pulled in over the pinchweld.

Anyone else remember reading about this? Correct me if I am wrong. Or, am I thinking that the installer would be on the "outside" for this glass, and be on the "inside" for a windshield.

Aloha.

From what I've read. Flat glass gets installed from the inside and curved glass from the outside.

I installed mine from the inside. You might try putting the ribbon around the glass and letting it lay flat for a few days. It kind of kinks and streches where it doesn't need to before you get it. Mine was long at first as well but wih the war department and some dish soap, it went right in after giving it a chance to assume it's new shape.

Sounds like the perfect age to learn how to put a back window in!

Maltman, he helped taking out the glass.

I'll try tying it tight to the glass and let it sit for a while. I tried the tape it to the glass trick which worked a bit better, but the rubber still pops off the glass as I work the lip up the sides. By the time I get 3/4 the way up on each side, the rubber on the top of the glass pops off and flops about.

It doesn't help that the glass is at 90 degrees+ to the ground. Maybe if I can find a set of those old steel ramps...drive up on those and let gravity help out.

So I tried a few more times, even once with suction cups for carrying glass to help shift and muscle things into place... No dice.

This morning I dropped the truck, gasket and glass at an auto body shop that was having it's glass guys in today.

Just got a call... they tried for an hour. They feel the gasket is almost 10 inches too long.

I got the Dennis Carpenter gasket RMA'd today as well. I hope its something stupid like a manufacturing defect.

I'm at the point where correct isn't better than in. I may just try the other gasket and make it cut to fit. I'm tired of tape and plastic.

I'll report back what I figure out.

If that's the case, why couldn't you cut it to size and put back together with contact cement. I agree it should be correct when you get it but it may just be the easier route before summer is over!

Besides, it makes a better story that way too! After all, the journey to completion is almost as much fun as getting there.
