I have a power steering pressure line leaking at the fitting that connects to the pump.I checked and made sure fitting is tight and still seeps fluid. Is there an o ring or teflon seal that is used at this connection? This is on a 1973 F-100 with 360 engine.
Yes,the top threaded fitting on the pump.I thought about using teflon tape but I was not sure about having some kind of other seal that was used here. Thanks
Teflon tape if for pipe fitting not compression or flare etc.
Ah yes forgot that nut is a flare nut. I was thinking when I did my bendix box I used tape for the 4 hoses.
On the pump side, the flare should be sealing as the threads are just there to hold it in place and not to help it seal. I've seen recommendations of lightly sanding the flare or using "little" thread paste on the either side. Not sure of any proper ways to stop a leak there.... are you sure it's tight enough? Definitely don't over tighten it tho
"For leakage between the hose fitting nut and hose tube (View A, Fig. 3),
tighten the nut to 35 ft-lb torque. If leakage persists, replace the discharge
fitting and reface the hose tube flare or replace the hose as required."
"To stop leakage between the discharge fitting and the pump body (View A, Fig. 3),
tighten the fitting to 35 ft-lb torque. If leakage persists, replace both O-ring seals."
First picture shows the saginaw pump style but this one's for the Ford-Thompson style pump. Not sure what setup you have but I'm guessing it's the Ford style since they seem to be more common, at least in my experience. Sameish setup though, no O-ring to be replaced on the pressure hose. If your leak is coming from behind the nut holding the reservoir on then there is an O-ring you can replace there. Picture below will show what I'm talking about
Wouldn't surprise me if you have some kind of hose chaffing or pin hole at the fitting, take a good look at it..... If that is the case finding the correct replacement hose can be a challenge (with the correct fittings), I recommend having one built at the local hose shop....
Both 2wd and 4wd hoses have the same fittings but the 4wd hose is longer and has 2 rubber sections. Either way one, gearbox end is 5/16" male inverted flare and the pump end is 3/8" female S.A.E. If you get one made you'll need a male tube nut that's 1/2" x 20 thread for the gearbox and a female tube nut that's 5/8" x 18 thread for the pump.
Or just get a new one since they're cheap

No F100/350 came with the Saginaw P/S pump. Only 1970's vehicles with Saginaw pump: 1972/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars with Hydro-Boost & 1975/79 Econolines.
Parts catalog pic: F100/350 Ford/Thompson "pencil neck" P/S pump. It has a steel reservoir, the P/S pressure hose threads onto the pump.
Note: Caption is wrong, should read 1973/74 E100/300 & 1973/77 F100/350.
