Angry Power steering lines

Fellas,
I know that this thread should be in the steering and suspension, but I figured I'd get a better response here, so here goes:

Just replace both my power steering lines (rusted out).

Now I cannot get the return line flare to seal on the steering box. Tried blowing out reciever hole in the steering box, cleaned the brass inverted flare with crocus cloth, and STILL no luck.

ANy help would be appreciated.

Thanks

How bad is the leak? Mine leaked just slightly a while back. I put a little bit of teflon tape on the hold down bolt (I'm not sure if you're supposed to do this or not, but it worked). That fixed the leak for me.

I got a lil leak i'm kinda scared of on mine, Some Powerstearing fluid is comming out of the metal part or something, Wish i had digi cam, i would take pictures, i'm not sure how to explain it.

I think its sometimes better to post here and have it moved, cause it can still be accessed from this forum while moved and then more people see it.

The inverted flare fittings seal with a metal-metal seal and that any scratch in the sealing surface will cause it to leak. You will need to check the seal surface at the box and also on the hose. if the box seal surface is damaged it is replacement time. If the hose is damaged those can sometimes be re-flared, if not replace.

Think CLEAN when working with hydraulics!!!

Always install an inline filter when repairing the steering system!
Wix transmission/PS filter #58964
200 psi working, pressure relieved, magnetic
change yearly or 12000 miles
Ford equivalent filter kit #XC3Z-7B155-AA
filter alone #XC3P-7B155-BA

Teflon tape will do nothing for the seal and teflon tape fragments will destroy the PS pump and unit. The teflon tape probably allowed the other user to tighten his fitting a little tighter and the seal surfaces deformed enuf to seal Not a good situation tho since tape fragments will trash his system.

Not true. I only leave that "moved" notification if a few people have replied to a thread before I got to it. I move tons of threads from this forum (atleast 2-3 a day if not more) without you guys knowing it. Only a small fraction of the threads I move are ones that I leave a notification. I only notify the poster in private. Also, that moved notification is only left on here for a short amount of time. This one is OK in this forum solely because they don't really talk about steering in the other forum very specifically, it's general.. Please review my sticky at the top of this forum if you are unsure as to what goes in here. It is essential that threads be put in the correct forum.

Yeah, MustangGT, I wasn't sure about the teflon tape. I didn't put much on it, and what I did put on was on the top side of the nut so none of it got into the system. It was on the factory lines on my '87, and have since replaced the pressure hose. I didn't want to recommend something that was not generally recommended by others. Just saying that the little bit I put on mine worked for me, although it may have not been the best thing for it. It was cheaper than having to buy a new box or hose.

I recently changed the lines on my 90F150 w/ the 302....All went smootly, I did need to bend the lines slightly to make them fit, but other than that it was mint......Try the wiggle and turn technique, maybe your not getting them in enough?

I got the problem fixed.

I should've known better than to go to the local chain auto parts store around here. I was going to put a new double flare on the line, but the line bend was too tight.

New line from a GOOD auto parts store, and all is well.
Thanks for the help.
