My stock foot switch for my hi/low beams has not worked for a long time and was thinking of replacing it, however I never really liked the foot switch so I went searching for a different way and came up with in my mind a better solution, at least for me.
What I did was take a headlight relay from a VW that will switch from high or low beams with a push of a button. If the headlights are off than pressing the button will flash the heads lights for "flash to pass". I am too young I think and never heard of this but my dad knew what I was talking about. The set up is really easy:
The relay is switched when it is grounded, so the momentary switch is for ground instead of 12v +
I really like how it turned out, I have the switch illuminate when the headlights are on and it works great!

Good idea. I was thinking of the same thing, only using this toggle switch which is momentary on (flash high beams), off (low beams), on steady (high beams).
I just bought a headlight dimmer setup for my 40. It's a turn signal lever with a button on the end that replaces the foot switch. There is a control module that gives you more functionality than the OEM foot switch. It is made by IDIDIT, here is the link http://www.jegs.com/i/Ididit/535/3100030140/10002/-1
A little pricey but in my case it is cheaper than modifying an aftermarket floor.
I think that should work, more or less the toggle switch will only flip the relay to switch to high beams, either momentary or steady. The off position wouldn't be used if I understand the wiring the correctly. When the relay coil is not energized (toggle switch off) it should operate your low beams (so anytime your turn on your headlight switch on your low beams are on) and when you energize the coil in the relay it will allow you to switch to your high beam circuit.

That is a very nice switch. That is the same idea that VW had with the relay I used. They have a button on the turn signal that acts as the switch. In my case I just added a switch button in my dash below the headlight pull **** switch.
I like those solutions. Look good and less expensive. The button would fit where the starter button was located. I was trying to avoid cutting holes in my new floor.

Those turn signal buttons are very nice looking, a little pricey for me at the moment. I actually drew up this schematic before I tackled the job this weekend. Let me know if you need any help clarifying what I did. I have it wired so that when the dashboard lights come on so does the momentary switch LED light.
