So if it all works out this weekend will be the first time I am doing any real towing with my van for an extended distance. I have all my gauges hooked up, but wanted to make sure I had my limits straight,
1. EGT below 1200*
2. Coolant Temp below 240*
3. Trans Temp below 220*. Not 100% sure on this one. My trans is a C6.
240* is THE LIMIT for non syn. atf. Once it hits 240 its done and needs changed. Ideally, you would want to keep it under 195 (165 is ideal), but being that its a C6, it wont. C6 tend to run warm, do you have a cooler? What kind of weight are we talking here? I like to err on the cautious side, so my numbers typically are 1100egt, 220 engine, 220 trans.

I am running Valvoline Max Life Synthetic. I am going to look at a 30ft TT. Title says 5100 lbs, but the owner says it is probably closer to the 6500-7000 lb range. I have towed an open car hauler at that weight before, but it didn’t have the large frontal area for added resistance. I am running a trans cooler out of a 6.0 with a thermostat that opens at 195*.

Id say you should be good, especially with the cooler. I dont remember, do you have a turbo on your van? They do tow heavy, mine is a 28' i think, heaviest 5500 lbs ive ever pulled anywhere.

Not yet. I have a kit sitting in my garage awaiting installation. Just waiting for the weather to break so I can get to work on it. The van is too tall to fit in the garage, so I am stuck working in the driveway.
Trans cooler setup. I am a little curious if the trans cooler is reducing flow through the radiator. My coolant temps always seemed normal, but I figure I will find out for sure once I hook up a real load. I think the vans might run a little hotter than the trucks due to packaging.
All I have is an educated guess. I'd limit the upper temperature to 250°F. The fluid can handle higher temps, but I don't know enough about the C6 to know if there are internal parts that would be damaged above that temp.
Thanks for the feedback. I am going to look at a 30ft TT on Saturday. Weight wise it's not too big of an issue. I have towed the weight before on an open car hauler. I just know TT have a lot more frontal area, so there will be a lot more air to push.
If it all works out and I drag it home I will report back on how it went.
Well, I pulled it home last night. Van ran like a champ. Outside temps were in the 40's. Trans temp never went above the 160's. Coolant temps stayed in the 190-205 range. Pulled at 65mph. Only had to back out of the throttle 1 or 2 times due to EGT's.
Reading through this, I wondered what a TT was. I know what TT`s are but TT?
Oh! they are talking about a Car Trailer, but what kind of a Car trailer is a TT???
Yep, but now we're searching for that FORD van, that has to be somewhere??? LOL
They are out there, but kinda rare. A lot of the ones I have seen are cargo vans vs passenger vans. I got lucky and stumbled across mine locally on Craigslist when I was van shopping.
