I have a 2000 F350 with a 7.3L diesel. 239k miles on her...never, ever had one issue until the other day, it quit on me. Luckily I was at a buddy's shop when it did too.
He has a couple of these too, so it was in good company. I just left it there and said "let them deal with it, call me when it's done." At first they were apprehensive, given the turmoil they just experienced getting their 2002 F-350 7.3L wrecker to run for more than 6 miles. They threw a couple thousand dollars at it, changed everything. Found it to be vapor locking. Once they solved that it runs fine. So understandably they weren't really crazy about working on mine now. But I said "look...I'm busy and I'm gonna farm it out anyways, might as be with you guys." One guy swore it was the high pressure oil pump, another said crank sensor, another says sending unit...another saying something else, I said, "let's start with the simple stuff...I'm leaning towards the fuel pump down on the frame."
They changed the fuel pump yesterday after I said GO, and that's what it was luckily. One guy being suspicious as I was of it, took the lines off and ran the pump from a jug of fuel and it was running/making noise, but wasn't pumping. Then he tried the used one they just took out of the wrecker I previously mentioned and it shot fuel up to the ceiling. They sold me that used pump for $50.00 and I went away happy. I was expecting thousands.
My question is this; all those guys swore in that shop that you need to buy an OEM Ford pump in order for them to be any good, to hold pressure. I saw on this site before that someone discovered that Motorcraft pumps are made by someone else anyway..(Airtex maybe?) can't quite remember the name of the manufacturer now.
I see pumps on Amazon for as low as $38.00 new, for a 2000 7.3L, but they're telling me these OEM Ford pumps from the dealers are almost $600.00. What's the popular opinion on what pump to relace this one with if/when it finally goes on me?
In my mind, I don't see the problem with putting an aftermarket pump on, but these guys are pretty adamant about a factory "Ford pump"...which they don't build themselves anyway I don't believe.
So you spent $50 on a used pump that was removed with unknown miles on it or left in it? Do you at least have a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the pumps health so it doesn't leave you on the side of the road? You can buy brand new for $100 and KNOW you what you have will last you awhile. IMO, that shop took advantage of you. I hope it works out for you.
The original factory fuel pumps were made in Europe...either Germany or Czek, can't remember. The same is now being produced elsewhere...China maybe. This is why you can get them at the local parts store and only have a 1 year warranty. You can however, get a Motorcraft unit for about $400 at the local parts store with a life time warranty. The last one I bought was another brand with a life time warranty for around a $100 at the local parts store. That being said, I have been through my share of the cheap ebay units, and still have a couple I keep in case, as they are easy to change out.
If you haven't changed out the quick disconnect and installed a small see through screen filter between the back of the pump and the hard line coming from the fuel tank, I would highly recommend doing so. This is easy to do and will save the pump and/or injectors given the quick disconnect is known for sucking air into the system...they are designed to push tight and not pull. I also agree about the in tank mod but that is a little more involved...but with as many miles on your truck it is something that will leave you stranded when that filter sock clogs.
