Fuel pumps vs. the competition

Hey guys this is a crazy thread, But here goes. I was over at chevy talk and they were talking about how Gms fuel pumps on there pickups were a weak spot. It seems like the longevity of those pumps were very bad. One guy has had to put on 4 pumps in 100,000 miles. Me myself I have over 120,000 miles on my pickup and have never had a pump failure yet. Knock on wood. Does ford have this issue with there pickups. Over there they have 5 pages on that thread about it. How about you all. Whats your thoughts.

Father-in-law had to put a fuel pump in his '99 1500 with a 4.3. Cost him over $300 for the pump alone. At the time it was only a few years old and it was the first of the returnless pumps. I told him he should have just got a regular pump and put in a return line. Anyway, that should scare someone off of a Chevy pretty bad.

Every Chevy I know of has had the fuel pump die. Mine died and left me stranded at the lake one night. That was one of three times it stranded me in 3 years...so I sold it and came back to Ford.

A friend of mine had his go out on the second or third day he had the chevy. I want to say that it had less than 100 miles on it. By the way me now drives a F-150. He got tired of that chevy and all its problems.

Wow, this thread is really letting Chevy have it! I am surprised that someone will a personal vendetta against Ford hasn't come on here to tell you how you are all brand-biased people and that Ford has problems with their fuel pumps, too.
Oh, and yeah, Chevy makes a terrible fuel pump, another reason why they never quite got to that number one spot in selling trucks.

Here is the Chevy guy,
Yea, go ahead have your little fun talk about the couple fuel pumps that went out

It's small potatoes compared to the problems Ford is having with their new diesel motor. Fuel pump vs rear-main seal, injectors, poor mileage, poor customer service, etc...

So I'd say most Chevy guys are reading over this thread are prolly snickering - that is if they don't have that 'piston-slap' problem...

Yup...every one. Mine died...my cousin's died a week later. My old college roommate was replacing his last month. After church one day last year I saw a guy on the side of the road...pulled over to ask if he needed help...his Z71s fuel pump had died. It's like every person I know with a Chevy truck has been stranded by the fuel pump quiting. To me, that isn't their major problem though. All GM trucks have been plagued by numerous recalls...recalls that are dangerous at that. Faulty tranny vent lines causing fires, brakes not being strong enough, brake lines rubbing on suspension and being cut, etc. Heck, I couldn't begin to list all the stuff that commonly goes wrong on GM trucks. Glad I don't have one anymore.

My father HAD a 99 GMC 4x4. Fuel pump went out on it at 20,000 miles. But that was minor compared to the transmission failing at 15,000 miles, and at about 35,000 miles the tie rod on the front collapsed causing the truck to roll at 70 mph....

Now he owns a 7.3L Superduty (like me) and could never be happier.

My dad has never had a fuel pump failure on either of his GM pickups, an 89 and a 98. He did, however, have a problem with the fuel tank on his 98 Chevy. Something in the fuel pump and pick up assembly within the tank got plugged up and the tank collapsed and started leaking, because there was no way to allow air into the tank to ease the pressure. I guess that this happens to a number of Chevy pickups with the 34 gallon tank. If anyone here owns, or knows somebody who owns one of these pickups, be sure to drill a hole in the gas cap, just to be safe.

I like the dual tanks on my Ford, because even if a fuel pump does go, there is another one to use until it can be fixed.

Thats a great tip MJD you should mention that over on the chevy truck forums that could save somebody a lot of grief and expense and aggravation as well. Those tanks need a air vent. Good job

You guys just know I had to say something!

This thread did get me thinking - you know what Ford has that I really like is a 1 ton pickup without the dulley.

All companies offer 1-tons in a single wheel setup now don't they?

i don't think that GM does, but it doesn't really matter, because I believe that the 3/4 ton HD pickups are acually 1 tons.
