Side view mirror woes

Side view mirror woes
The outside side view mirrors on my ’56 F100 developed metal fatigue and will not hold the mirror in a steady position. The mirror head socket mushrooms over time upon adjusting and then loosens on the rotation ball causing movement.
Have any of had this problem and what remedy have you used to correct it?

Had an issue like that, and fixed it by rotating head to end of travel and then taking a punch and peening a few spots on the ball that would be hidden when adjusted normal. Tightened it up and has stayed fixed for a few years now.
