I have small side views on my 84.. I'm sure there are others out there but for the life of me all I've seen on trucks and vans are the large towing type. I was going to replace mine but they seem rare/unique.. Any comments ??? P.S. Canadian Built
Yes, they are probably rare and unique because it's hard to see out of them when using the truck with loads that block your vision and you need to back up with the mirrors.
I found out the top two bolt holes that hold those mirrors on match the larger mirrors top bolts, so the little mirrors come off if I have a truck that has them. I then add the two more bolts on the bottom. I just did my ranger, it surprised me the bolt pattern is the same on the little trucks also. The big mirrors fit on it fine.
I have those same mirrors on my [American built] 1985 Lariat. And you're right; you don't see this style very often. I think these *look* better, so I kept them when I restored my truck.
Even though the larger swing-lock style mirrors are obviously more functional, I never really liked how big (DUMBO EARS!) they are and how the lower brace bolts half-way down the door.

The left hand mirror was standard equipment, the right hand and all other mirrors were optional.
But none of these mirrors were factory installed. Whatever mirrors were specified, were placed inside the cab at final assembly, as the dealers installed all the outside mirrors.
And the type I am going to install on my truck after painting.
I went with this type as the truck will be used as a back up to pull my car trailer and you need good mirrors.

My Canadian built '84 F150 has the small mirrors also. I assumed they were common on the bare bones mostly option~less work trucks. I quite like them and prefer them on my truck, but they're really not very functional in my opinion. They do the job, but barely.
I think they have their place. I like the bare bones look and feel of my truck, and the small mirrors suit that. I like being reminded of days gone by when a man could order a truck with the options he wanted, or without the ones he didn't want. (My truck also has no radio, and a kinda like that as well).
Look at 60s cars, looks like the same type of mirror on my '68 Galaxie. Probably gives you a much better view than the repops of the typical style used on these trucks. If anyone knows a source for mirror glass that doesn't zoom way in giving a narrow and useless field of view I'd love to buy some. Original mirrors had a very wide field of view.
I've got the same ones on my '83 base. They do the job for normal driving although I don't look in them as much as I just turn my head to see behind/around me. They're not good for backing into a spot though (I like being able to see the lines) and I'd imagine they are not sufficient for towing. I kinda prefer the big swingy ones but I don't feel like drilling into the door just to swap them out.
