If I understand correctly, my truck has the "West Coast Mirrors." As you can see in the photo (only one I have showing the back side of the mirrors), there are convex mirrors attached to them.
I presume the convex mirrors are not stock. Frankly, I find them irritating, so I am thinking of removing them. Is this a bad idea?
Is there some reason why these mirrors would not do well as originally designed? Do I need the convex add-ons?
No, they are not "stock", they are probably stuck on with 3M tape. I bet the PO put them on.
Should peal off easy or use a hair dryer to warm up the tape, then peel easy.
Do not use a screwdriver to pry on them directly, but maybe a wide putty knife wrapped in a rag?
If you have to get a little more effort, use the metal mirror body edge to get some leverage with a longer screwdriver. Yes I know I said to not use a screwdriver, but you get my point, right?
I like the convex add-ons but mine are smaller and tucked in a corner of the mirrors. try it without them and if you miss the added visibility put some smaller ones in the bottom corner. That way you can keep more flat 'real estate' open in the primary mirrors.
Here's an oddity on my '71 F-250.. Typically on the back of the mirror heads have either have "FoMoCo" or the Ford ovallogo. I have "Rotunda" on the back of a mirror head. Unfortunately the PO broke one moons ago and replaced it with a dime store version. I replaced the generic head with a spare head so it at least looks OEM.
These were the over-the-counter kit for those who didn't opt for them when first sold. That makes sense because the door still has a plastic plug and screw holes where the standard mirror was mounted.
Lemme know if any of you have a spare "Rotunda" mirror head cuz I'd be interested.
