It’s been cold here the last week or so truck gelled up and batteries died on me a week ago got the truck home changed filters and recharged batteries now I’m having an issue with the starter changed it once already still sounds like it’s missing /grinding flywheel but only on first start up after it’s been sitting in the cold once it warms up it’s fine thought maybe I got a bum starter so I returned it reinstalled another new one and same issue I’m stumped on what it can be I had zero issues before it died on me last week pls help!!! two bad starters seems unlikely battery voltage seems to be sitting around 13.5 while truck is running according to tuner
Running voltage doesn’t give a good picture of the batteries overall condition, especially sitting in the cold overnight. If you have a voltmeter a quick check would be to pull the neg terminal off one batt, then check the voltage of each. It should be in the 12.5-12.6 range. The better method is to check the batteries with a real battery checker at an auto parts store. From the work I’ve done they can be checked when driving to the store, but you need to pull one neg terminal when they are checked.
Pulling one neg terminal allows you to check each battery individually, but by keeping the other in place you do not loose the trucks electronic memory.
Also, checking the ground points as well as the terminals for clean condition is also imperative. Also a relook at the wire condition at the starter lug may not hurt.
Sounds like old school case of it not being shimmed correctly, however I have never heard of a 6.0 starter needing to be shimmed for alignment. It should not be grinding or hittting anything, period, unless something happened to the flywheel and you have a case of a runaway starter and don't know it.

Anyone else?
Ya it’s weird it only does it when it’s very cold today high of 20’s and it’s fine yesterday was below zero and it was acting up only on first start up almost like the bendix is frozen I’m stumped like I said it was fine before it got really cold I was thinking maybe batteries are getting weak
Sean is right about having them checked. If it is the batteries you should be experiencing a slower rotation of the motor and if you’re monitoring voltage a lower drop during initial engagement. Not sure if the solenoid contact for the starter motor in this version is spring loaded and can engage the motor before full extension. If so, these rebuilt starters may have been rebuilt with excessive lubricant or a lubricant that is more viscous in cold then the factory specs in the moving spline area, which may hamper engagement just enough to cause the issue your experiencing. Normally it shouldn’t, but god knows with a rebuilt.
Ok I’ll test them today when I get home I’ve tried everything else I know with these trucks I’ve read that they kinda go haywire with low batteries thanks for the advise guys!
