I am having trouble starting this 1992 Diesel. The batteries checked out O.K. I also did a hydrometer check, O.K. I am interested in the starter draw. When I hook up my Digital Meter I have the van turned over and I am left with about 5 or 6 volts. If I remember correctly I am suppose to have 9+. Can someone please give me alittle insight. I believe the starter is cooked?
Thanks.
Could still be a bad cell in the battery, when you load test the batteries you must disconnect the negative cable from one battery. If you do not, the good battery will mask the bad one.
If someone has cranked the starter for to long without letting it cool between tries it could be cooked.
I think the Mitsubishi gear reduction starters are the best replacement part for the job. They spin mine faster than the Delco one does.
Must have left my brain out in the cold, I did not check the batteries seperately. I will have to do that later. I did do a hydrometer check and all the cells read good. What I did find was a cut in the negative cable that lead to corrosion in the wiring. That appears to have been the problem. It started with no problem. And after some major investigation I found the specs on the starter draw. 140 to 200 amps. Thanks for your help, I will remember to check the batteries separately.
