Yeah, my son up by Billings has been having fits trying to keep the cattle with water - nothing but spring fed tanks w/o heaters (the spring and all the lines to tanks are froze).
Son got water to stock! At below zero F. Hell of a young man he is proving to be!
Boss back from Stock Show in Denver - hope he appreciates his new partner.
I was looking at the freeze alerts for Florida this morning. Everybody there is receiving instructions in what to watch out for with cold weather - like pipes freezing up. We in the North have everything permanently built with freezing weather in mind - but those in the South are not geared for this sort of thing. A lot of damage can occur from damaged plants/crops to broken water lines and burst engine blocks (if no antifreeze is in there).
The house my mom rents down this way has to have the shower and sink tap dripping or it WILL freeze during overnight temperatures like this. I had to tell her that her rental house was not built with the same materials as her house in IA was.
My house on the other hand is double walled brick, so we are good to go
In addition, most people down in this part of the country have heat pumps only. Some have furnaces, but not most. Heat pumps are very good at what they do, but when the temperature gets into the high 20's they struggle. We have 2 new (4 years old) Trane units and they do a good job, but when the temperature gets into the teens, they struggle a bit too. We offset those times by keeping fires in the fireplaces and that works well for us.
