I just had my oil changed at the dealer. I took a 2 mile trip and found it was leaking at the filter. So I wiped it off, drove it and yes, It was still leaking. Took it back, watched as they changed it and it is leaking. Thoughts?
I did try hand tightening it. It is a motorcraft. No issued before this.
Is it possible the old filter 'o-ring' might have came loose and is stuck to the filter housing? I've seen this type of thing before but it's pretty uncommon.
Lots of cases where it looks like it's leaking, but it's just the dirty oil that dripped on the outside of the gasket when it was installed leaking out. I had to wipe mine off a couple of times before it stopped when the deealer did the change. Wasn't a problem when I changed it. I'm neater I suppose.
Just wanted to give the final story. Evidently the first oil filter did have a seam failure. But I think the second one was more to what 2009kr said. I wiped it of extremely well all along the seam and top. Tried to give it one hard turn when cold, but it did not budge. So I do believe it was residual on top that dripped onto the side when it was in motion.
Did my first OC this past Saturday. Removed the oil filter last. Center punched first and let drain for a long time, then when the flow stopped I opened the OEM filter a couple turns and a LOT more oil came out from the top. This, mind you, was long after the oil pan had been draining for a solid hour and was pretty much empty. (yes, before you think it, the first thing I do is remove the filler cap up top) I was surprised at how much oil was up there in the area where the filter screws on to. I let it hang there for about 15 - 20 minutes more while the oil flow continued and then it finally was over. Thoroughly cleaned the area and pre-loaded the new MC filter and buttoned her all back up. I can only imagine how much residue a quick-change tech at Ford/Quicklane/insert-name-here place may leave behind if they change and fill the oil in a 6.7L in under 45 minutes. This sucker takes long time to clean out properly. $0.02
