oil filter housing
2 days ago I went for a quick oil change at a quicky lube place.
Today I notice that I was leaking oil in my brand new driveway. So I look and it looked like I was loosing oil around the Oil Filter.
So I drove back there and they changed the oil filter again. But before they showed me that inside where the oil filter goes. Where the rubber from the oil filter is suppose to seal there is a hole there, maybe 1/8 or so.. and they think I cannot get a seal because of that?
Those guys are not mechanic and I am not one either. Is that hole suppose to be there? Am I missing an o-ring or something or do I need to replace the Oil Filter housing(If Possible)
Its a ford ranger 1998 with a V6 3.0L
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Paul
Oil change places do not have a great reputation with a lot of FTErs -- I've read many horror stories. I've fortunately never had a bad experience because I usually change my own.
But on to your question. Kind of depends on what you saw. I never gave flow through the filter much thought, so I looked it up. Oil is pumped in through the little holes in the filter and exits through the large hole in the center. This implies that there is an opening in the filter housing from which oil is pumped into the filter. This would be inside of the rubber ring area.
I'm guesssing that's what you saw.
