Sorry I didn’t see the alternator question it’s a ford reman about 50,000 miles and my tester is at the house but my gauge normally reads 14.1-14.2 when running. I have been thanking about it and I feel it’s a combination of the batteries and may be a short on the air horn(hardline with a fuse) The p/o installednit and let’s say thanks to him I have had the opportunity to learn how to repair the truck faster than I would have liked to.
Pep boys said cya later you’re only supposed to get one replacement during warranty.
Now or another curve has come I can get the batteries delivered installed for 290 or One of the budget stores I hate said they will cut me a deal for 300 instead of 400 on 2 AGM batteries but they are only 750 CCA. My question is is that an okay CCA for that type of battery combined with this type of truck?
My current (haha) truck batteries are now in their TENTH year of service, outlasting both original alternators, and still cranking strong, despite the infrequency of truck usage (only 2,500 miles per year).
After the two alternator failures, I noticed a bit of lazy "crankiness" following long periods of sitting, but even that cleared up once I got the Leece Neville 230 amp alternator installed last year, which can produce up to 100 amps of charging current just off idle.
Combined with the lower secondary alternator that kicks in once the glow plug relay cuts off current to the glow plugs, I'm thinking why not go for another two years on these Enersys built, Sears branded, Odyssey Extreme equivalent, now discontinued Die Hard Platinum AGM batteries?
12 years of service out of a pair of $189 - $229 batteries easily beats changing batteries every 3 or 4 years... for the 4 time avoidance of the back breaking task of clearing the battery over the fender alone. Two sets of upright rows each and every change.
I couldn't care less about "free" warranty replacements... too many demands on my time to waste energy doing deadlifts while playing musical batteries with underpaid wax and oil chainstore employees fiddling with their test instrument to prove me wrong.
Since Sears is going out of business in an agonizingly slow but near certain death... you know something is wrong when a CEO lends a publically traded company 60 million dollars out of his PERSONAL funds this year in order to make payroll... And since Enersys no longer makes batteries for Sears, the option of these batteries that have been chugging along for a decade now no longer exists.
The next closest option available on nights and weekends is the Northstar AGM battery sold by Batteries + Bulbs under the X2 Power brand.
Autozone gold here also. I have pretty good luck with them but I put the battery tender on every couple weeks all winter as I dont drive it much in the winter. I get 4-5 years out of a set
I bought my NorthStar batteries off the company website and the batteries were at my door 2 days later. They were about a month old from their creation date when they arrived.
Y2KW57 and Brian42 were the inspiration for upgrading to AGM batteries.
I am currently running twin duralast golds, figure if I am replacing one bad battery I am going to do both as the other isnt going to be too far behind anyways....I am also running an Alt from a 6.dho truck I think its a 120 Amp vs the stock 95 AMP alt....(i think? might have been lower)
I use the Duracell brand batteries from Sam’s club. They are made by East Penn, the same people who make Deka. I have had one last 7 years on my wife’s SUV, plus Sams are usually pretty easy to find if you’re traveling and from my past dealings with them, the warranty replacement should be a breeze!
(Plus after you get your membership you can buy the 1,000,000 roll sized packs of toilet paper and such! Lol)
I just got two Interstates from Costco this week. $92.00+- each, best buy for the money IMO. They are 40 month replacement warranty. I thought that TSC carried DEKA batteries, which get rave reviews, but when I went there they now have Exide and they don't have 850 CCA. Interstate batteries from an Interstate dealer have 36 month replacement warranty and 96 month pro-rated but I didn't price them, I expect them to be about $150.00 apiece. I came close to getting those Bosch batteries at my local parts store, now I'm happy that I didn't.
I just got a Costco (Interstate) battery last year and they dropped the prorata warranty altogether and upped the replacement from 36 to 42 months.
Did they drop the replacement warranty another 2 months this year?
I bought a pair of Sears Die Hard Platinum's in May 2012 which is over 5-1/2 years and they are as good as the day I installed them.
Really a shame they are no more. But Odyssey 65 series is who makes them I think.
Yes, the Odyssey Extreme 65 is the "new" Sears Die Hard Platinum. In addition, the NorthStar AGM-65 is nearly identical to the Odyssey. So, when you are in the market in say 5 years or so for new batteries, check both of these out.

Ya know, my sister had one of those in her Lincoln Navigator which was 6 years old. I told her I get really nervous after about 5 years on a battery so I talked her into getting an Interstate from Costco. Same size as the Platinum, but boy was I surprised at the difference in weight. The Platinum was a lot heavier! Maybe it would have lasted longer.
I'm running a pair of Dekas (Fisher branded) in my truck right now and they've been running great, been through three rounds of injector replacement cranking in 0°-15° weather and have performed flawlessly. Plus the guys I deal with stand behind their product no matter what, so that's nice as well.
If you have a Fisher's/Federated near you I'd stop in and see what they have, if they're anything like my store you'll be done right.
