hey whitey, I'm thinking of doing the same down pipe and installing a flow through muffler. How tuff was it to get the down pipe in? Any tricks?
Not hard at all. When taking it off, disconnect it from the turbo first, then cut it at the bend before the crossmember. Then it comes out easy. Need two people to install new one. One underneath that directs the pipe for the guy reconnecting to turbo. We did spray the turbo clamp really good with PB a couple of hours before when the truck was a little warm but not hot.

ok thanks whitey, i will give it a shot. which brand did you go with?
When I went with my Magnaflow exhaust I guess they had the option to "split the difference" and I ordered the 3 1/2" down pipe for better low end torque for towing. At least that is what I believe to have. No clearance issues at all but I have not actually measured anything specifically.

Nice, I think 5” is where you start having serious clearance issues.
Comparing EGT numbers when empty to EGT numbers when towing is apples and oranges IME. When my up-pipes were leaking, the EGTs were fine when it was empty. When I hooked the trailer up is where it became very evident there was a problem.
I bought an MBRP 4" turbo-back exhaust when I first got the truck because that's what I thought you were supposed to do. Oops. When I replaced the up-pipes earlier this year, I pulled the downpipe for easier access to the passenger side pipe. It wasn't very difficult to remove or install and I didn't need a second person. I did have to fight with it a little bit to get it in, but it finally popped into where it should be after a few minutes of wrestling.
Not to argue with Cody but I didn't notice any issues getting the passenger side valve cover off with the downpipe in place on my particular truck.
